  1. The salemWitch trials By Nicole Neytor 7A3 ID2

  2. Prologue…. • The setting of this crisis was in good old Salem, Massachusetts. • Salem was a town where the Puritans lived. • The Puritans were a group of people who wanted to purify or “simplify” the church, and make it more strict. • The Puritans were English. They were also Anglican (religion believed in England). • And by purify I mean, nothing special. • They believed that Christ wanted them to respect him, and their religion in a simple manner.

  3. How it startedIt was January 1692 • One day The daughter (Betty Parris), and niece (Abigail Williams) of Reverend Samuel Parris became mysteriously ill. They both started to have mysterious, and random seizures, and spasms. • Samuel called the village doctor (William Griggs). His diagnoses was witchcraft. • Later on, Betty Parris, and Abigail Williams had been accused for the act of witchcraft. • And from that day on everyone in Salem had believed in witches, witchcraft, and wizardry.

  4. Abigail, and Betty both blamed 3 women that they said afflicted them. • Those 3 women were: • Sarah Good- a homeless beggar • Sarah Osborne- a elderly famished woman • Tituba- slave of the Parris family (Caribbean)

  5. Sarah Good & Sarah osborne&Tituba • These women were convicted of being witches. And so were brought to court. • How you ask? • As I told you before they were all poor, and impoverished. • The local magistrates ran a trial against Sarah Good, Sarah Osborne, and Tituba. This trial started on March1,1692. • Both Good, and Osborne claimed to be innocent. Unlike Tituba who confessed to the magistrates that “The Devil came to me and bid me serve him”. She described images of black dogs, red cats, yellow birds, and a “black man” who wanted her to sign a type of book. • The magistrates put all of the 3 women in jail.

  6. And the killing Begins…….. • On May 27, 1692 Governor William Phipps created the Special Court of Oyer (to hear) and Terminer ( to decide) that was only for the Suffolk, Essex, and Middlesex countries. • On June 10 the first hanging occurred. That persons name was Bridget Bishop. Bridget was also the first person to be questioned. SALEM WAS A MESSED UP VILLAGE!!! AND DEFINALTLEY PARANOID!!! • Soon after that one hanging, 5 people were executed in July, then 5 in August, and then 8 in September.

  7. The killing stops • Governor Phipps son (Increase Mather) begs his father to stop questioning after his own wife got questioned. • Phipps released a lot of the accused people, and Stopped the Court of Oyer and Terminer. • He changed it to the Superior Court of Judicature. This court didn’t allow spectral (spiritual, ghostly, etc.) evidence. • By May 1693 Phipps let all charges go for all of the accused in jail.

  8. Many innocent lives were lost because of clueless people’s paranoia. 19 people were hanged. A 71 yr. old man was crushed to death by rocks. Several people died in jail. About 200 people were accused of being witches.
