  3. Overview • In this package we focus on understanding what is involved in completing the ‘Giveback’ section of the L1/L2 Certification package

  4. Giveback - Overview • Giveback covers everything beyond your day-to-day job • Increase your own technical vitality • Increase the vitality of other people at IBM • Contribute to IBM’s intellectual capital • Make an impact to the company

  5. Giveback - Requirement • For L1 Certification it is required that you provide details of your involvement in 2 areas of Giveback. • For L2 Certification, it is required that you provide details of your involvement in 3 areas of Giveback. • In either level of certification, one area of Giveback must be mentoring.

  6. Giveback - Areas • Instruction • Mentoring • Certification • Specialized Chair Assignments • Contribution to IBM’s intellectual capital on IT Specialist-related topics

Giveback - Instruction • Instruction on a topic outside of your regular job • Training team members on day to day work does not count • Wide variety of topics • What’s new in DB2 version X • How to use a Wiki in your team • Tips on passing a technical review • Lessons Learned from Project Y • Installing Notes 8 • Wide variety of formats • Formal classroom – to customers, business partners, internal teams • Teleconference, web cast, etc • Lunch’n’Learn • Podcast

Giveback - Mentoring • Mentoring is mandatory for both levels of certification. • Ideally, mentor several candidates at once • Mentor/ mentee relationships can take many forms • Hands-on assistance, e.g. reviewing presentations • Career advice • Developing networks and relationships • A broad stable of mentees is even better – across lines of business, geography, job roles

Giveback - Certification • Participation in ITS Certification Review Boards • Note: Participation on the IT Specialist certification review board is by nomination only. • Contributing to the quality, effectiveness and vitality of the IT Specialist certification process • For example, by participating in task forces to review and recommend updates to certification processes and requirements.

Giveback – Specialized Chair Assignments • Serving in a formal position recognized within your department/ business unit • Asset Reuse Coordinator • Software Security Auditor • Leading or participating in a cross-departmental/ cross-business unit team • Web Services Guidance Council • Technical Leadership Team • TEC A/NZ, Academy of Technology • In general, you’re working with people outside of your normal project team

Giveback - Intellectual Capital, publishing and patents • Covers all items that grow IBM’s intellectual capital: • Submissions to IC systems such as iRAM, Practitioner Portal • Patents • Include patent grants, patent applications filed and ideas published but not patented • Publishing of books and articles • Business related blogs and Wikis
