  1. Sustainable Solutions: Mobilizing and Deploying STMs for Meaningful Participation in Church-Initiated Holistic Development Moses Ndahiro Director Community Development-Rwanda P.E.A.C.E Plan www.RwandaHealthcare.com

  2. It is about New Wineskins Neither do men pour new wine into old wineskins. If they do, the skins will burst, the wine will run out and the wineskins will be ruined. No, they pour new wine into new wineskains, and both are preserved. Matthew 9:17  (New International Version)

  3. The P.E.A.C.E Plan Primary: Simplest, most reproducible efforts, requiring no outside resources and easily taught to virtually anyone. Unless this level is firmly established there will not be ownership or sustainability. (This is where local churches will be able to mobilize the greatest number of its members Secondary: Some expertise required as well as outside resources to initiate Tertiary: The greatest expertise and care provided, requiring the greatest amount of resources to initiate and maintain

  4. Community Development For development to take place… • People must understand their needs. • People must understand how these needs can be met. • People must have the freedom to make their own decisions and put them into action. (Bottom up policy)

  5. Core Values that are Essential for Effective Community P.E.A.C.E Implementation • Church-initiated and not Church-based or Church Informed • Not a program it’s a tool . • Respect those who live in the resource limited setting – we are all created in the image of God. • Pastors know who the best workers will be – trust them • The importance of asking the question, What is in your hand? • STMs are change catalyst not rescuers • STMs are learners and facilitators not teachers

  6. One person may give a thousand dollars to charity in order to earn a tax break; another may do it to win political favor; still another may act out of deep compassion for the poor. The same act can be set in motion by very different motives. The Bible teaches that God is as interested in our motives as in our behavior, for eventually, selfish and sinful motives produce selfish and sinful behavior.

  7. “It is different out there” – required cross-cultural training for all STMs Community ownership - whose problem is it? What we train is just as important as HOW we train. Goal is behavioral change, not transference of knowledge Understand and adhere to the principles of Relief, Development and Rehabilitation – the Galatians 6 principle Positive Deviants exist – find them!
