2. Introduction • The presentation today will act as an update of the present situation at the Llwyneinion Complex • We will discuss the wider issues around the site • We will provide a detailed summary of the works being undertaken

4. Llwyneinion Liaison Group • Began in July 2006 • Meetings every 3 months • It is chaired by Cllr Pemberton and involves 2 other WCBC Councillors and: - Representatives of Esclusham Community Council - Local residents - WCBC Officers - EAW Officers - Representatives from the Local Health Board

Llwyneinion Liaison Group cont… • Last meeting held in October and staff from North Wales Fire Service attended along with Environmental Consultants Entec & Enviros • Press article issued after each meeting • Positive – used to feedback information and to highlight important issues • Meetings well attended

6. Llwyneinion Officers Internal Working Group • Began in September • Meeting on a monthly basis • Group involves Officers from: - Public Protection - TAM - Legal - Emergency Planning - Rights of Way • Ensuring we are all working together and discussing issues such as the new fence & implementing advice from the Fire Service

7. Monsanto Chemical Waste Tip Site Investigation Works • Awarded £40,000 under WAG Contaminated Land Capital Funding Programme 2006/07 • Entec commissioned to undertake the further site investigation works • Works started in September with a ‘kick off’ meeting • Relevant Officers and Organisations are being kept informed via the Officers Internal Working Group & other meetings

8. Monsanto Chemical Waste Tip Site Investigation Works • Previous site investigation report done in 1995 • Current works are addressing potential issues raised in the report and; • Current works are also looking at possible changes in the circumstances on site since 1995 works

Monsanto Chemical Waste Tip Site Investigation Works Pollutant Linkages Being Investigated: • Solid, liquid, vapour substances → Direct exposure & inhalation → Site users/trespassers • Liquid substances → Migration via fill and natural ground/via groundwater/via worked coal seams, mine drainage adits → Surface Water • Liquid substances → Migration via mine shafts/natural ground→ Groundwater

10. Monsanto Chemical Waste Tip Site Investigation Works • Works slightly delayed due to necessary liaison with Coal Authority • 6 trial pits excavated on 27 Oct 06 (soil samples taken) • 4 shallow groundwater monitoring boreholes (c. 5m depth) installed last week • 6 window samples with gas monitoring installations currently being installed • 3 deep groundwater monitoring boreholes installed over the weekend

11. Monsanto Chemical Waste Tip Site Investigation Works Samples to be taken: • Soil (made ground, natural ground, leachability) • Groundwater • Surface Water • Railway Cutting seepages

12. Monsanto Chemical Waste Tip Site Investigation Works Findings to date: • Chemical waste covered with ash/brick/rubble fill • Chemical waste does not appear to extend across whole of site shown on earlier slide • EAW/WCBC sharing information to improve investigation works where possible

13. Monsanto Chemical Waste Tip Site Investigation Works The next few months… • Site investigation sampling points due to be completed in next week or so • Some sampling will continue for next 2-3 months • Report likely to be complete in March/April • Findings of the report will be communicated
