Ilya Yefimovich Repine né à Tchougouïev près de Kharkov, aujourd'hui en Ukraine, le 5 août1844 et mort le 29 septembre1930, est l'un des principaux peintres et sculpteurs russes du mouvement artistique Peredvizhniki. Ses œuvres réalistes expriment souvent une critique cinglante de l'ordre social. Son père était officier militaire. En 1866, il part à Saint-Pétersbourg où il étudie à l'Académie impériale des beaux-arts. Repine séjourne en Italie et à Paris, grâce à une bourse attribuée par l'Académie, de 1873 à 1876. Il pеint des paysans, des poissonnières et des scènes de la vie marchande. Repine rejoint l'association des artistes Peredvizhniki (Société des Expositions Artistiques Ambulantes) en 1878. À partir de 1882 il vit à Saint-Pétersbourg mais fait de nombreux voyages à l'étranger. Inspiré par les portraits de Rembrandt représentant des vieillards, il immortalise nombre de ses compatriotes les plus célèbres, tels Léon Tolstoï, Mendeleïev, Pobedonostsev, et Moussorgski. En 1903, il est chargé par le gouvernement russe de réaliser son œuvre la plus grandiose, une toile de 400 x 877 cm représentant la Session protocolaire du Conseil d'État pour marquer son centenaire le 7 mai 1901. Après la Révolution de 1917, son lieu de résidence, les Pénates, à Kuokkala, situé au nord de Saint Pétersbourg, est incorporé à la Finlande. Il est invité par Lénine à revenir en Russie, mais il est trop vieux pour entreprendre le voyage. Il ne revient en Russie que sur les supplications du ministre de l'éducation de l'Union Soviétique en 1926. Il meurt à Kuokkala, en Finlande (aujourd'hui redevenue russe : Repino, oblast de Leningrad) en 1930.
