National Standards: Standard 1: Students will comprehend concepts related to health promotion and disease prevention to enhance health. (Drug Education) Standard 4: Students will demonstrate the ability to use interpersonal communication skills to enhance health and avoid or reduce health risks. (Discussing, Writing, and Body Sculpture Activity) Assessment: 1. Students will complete a Steroid Learning Guide. 2. Students will present different unhealthy steroids effects from the male and female body composition activity.

  9. Introduction/Welcome Good afternoon class. Today we will be continuing our drug education unit by learning about steroids. You may have heard about steroids due to the case of Lance Armstrong.

  10. Bellringer/Warm-Up/Do Now5 minutes Used as a learning trigger to focus students on lesson. Relevant to the lesson or review previous lesson. Teacher uses this time for administrative duties.

  11. Bellringer List 2 healthy, safe, and legal activities you enjoy participating in during the weekends. 1. Hanging out with friends 2. Playing soccer.

  15. Introduction to Steroid Prevention Lesson You may have heard of several well known athletes using illegal steroids. Marion Jones was stripped of her Olympic medals in 2000 after it was determined she used steroids. The other members of her relay team also lost their medals. Todays lesson will give you reasons to avoid illegal steroid use.

  16. Introduction to Steroid Prevention Lesson Former Oakland Raiders professional football player Lyle Alzado admitted to steroid use. He said it attributed to his brain cancer which led to his death. Todays lesson will give you reasons to avoid illegal steroid use.

  17. Content Information/Lecture10-15 minutes Includes personalization infused throughout the lesson. Current events and pop culture are used. Relevant resources are taught to provide students with sources for additional information. Break up in to 5-10 minute intervals.

  23. Summarize Lecture Students answer a question, write a statement summarizing what they learned that from the lesson. List one fact you will tell a younger family member or friend about the importance of avoiding steroids. You should avoid steroids because they cause really bad acne.

  26. Introduction to Body Sculpture Activity We have learned important information about the unhealthy effects of steroid use. We are going to put this information to work by creating male and female body sculptures to highlight unhealthy steroid effects.

  27. Activity Single Step Directions Step by step directions that facilitate the effectiveness of an activity. Make sure step 1 is accomplished prior to moving to step 2. Some teachers give too many directions at one time which causes confusion.

Complete #16 on your Learning Guide ‘List 4 unhealthy effects of steroid use for males and female. 3. When I say Go, move to your learning guides, pencils and move to your learning group spaces and sit quietly.

  29. Activity Single Step Directions 4. Partner A come to the front of the room, take 2 big pieces of paper and 2 markers to your learning group. 5. Learning groups 1 & 2 draw a male, groups 3 & 4 draw a female body sculpture. 6. Draw the 4 appropriate unhealthy steroid effects on your sculpture. • .

  30. Summarize Activity Encapsulate the information. Tie it in to the content.

  31. Summarize Activity If you are a male answer: List one reason you do not want shrunken testicles. If you are a female answer: List one reason you do not want excessive facial hair.

  32. Summarize Activity List the name of an important male in your life. List one reason you will tell this person to avoid steroid use.

  33. Overall Lesson Summary Answer the essential question given at the beginning of the class. Answers are discussed as a class. Teachers offers a take away message.
