What’s with kids these days?! • In the 2009 NAEP report, 33% of 4th graders read below the “basic level” • 53% of 4th graders say that they enjoy reading every day, while only 20% of 8th graders say they read for fun • The average 8th grader only reads 15 minutes a day What are kids doing instead of reading? • They are probably consuming lots and lots of media • The average teen spends 7.5 hours on media devices a day (Kaiser Family Foundation, 2010)
