  4. Quick Facts • The world’s population, over 60, is expected to be almost 2 billion by the year 2050 • Today there are over 13,000 companies that are part of the Bluetooth Special Interest Group • Bluetooth is capable of doing 64Kbps audio streaming and 723.2Kbps data transfer rates

How It Works • It uses 79 different 1Mhz-wide channels and runs at a rate of 1600 hops per second • It is a Piconet/Ad-Hoc type network • There is no need for a pre-existing network structure to be set up This keeps interference from other wireless devices in the same range, like the 802.11b standard, from interfering too much. This means that up to seven devices can be connected to one master. This is a huge advantage over other technologies because it allows Bluetooth devices to connect seamlessly and simply.

Direct Competition to Bluetooth While the 802.11 standard and gsm are both the same as Bluetooth in that they all transfer data wirelessly, Bluetooth appears a better standard for medical applications. Advantages Disadvantages • Low Power consumption • Pre-existing infrastructure is not needed • Smaller devices • Shorter Range • Less Secure

  9. Combining Technologies Bluetooth has many potential applications in the healthcare industry, but would work best combined with both the 802.11 standard and gsm. This gives us the ability to monitor different statistics on different patients all at the same time in a centralized location.

  10. Love it or hate it, its here to stay. Bluetooth technology is all around us, and it has been for years. Our lives are seamlessly integrated with our personal electronics thanks to wireless technology. Bluetooth Technology has allowed us to do a lot of great things; things that we probably could not have imagined ten years ago. Imagine what great things will be done in the next ten years now that we are focusing our attentions on healthcare technology.
