  5. What the heck is the Tao?!?! • Tao means The Way • Lao Tzu wanted his philosophy to remain a natural way to live life with goodness, serenity and respect

  6. Religious Goal To achieve the Tao (in the supreme reality sense) ** 81 heavens over 100 hells Philosophical Goals Reaching and maintaining a state of harmony with Nature Achieving the Tao Philosophy or Religion?Both actually..but we have to look at the goals to see it

  7. How does a Taoist reach both types of goals?

  8. Reaching the goals… One must follow the Tao One must eliminate desire, ambition, struggle One must reach a state of harmony in Nature; must balance Yin and Yang

  9. Yin Yang • Represent opposite principles in universe • Yang (White)- maleness, sun, life, heat, light, dominance • Yin (Black)- femaleness, moon, death, cold, submission • Cannot live without the other; therefore, there are seeds of their opposite state within them

  10. The Nature of Nature ….the myriad creatures all revere and honor the Tao….because it is natural for them….. Yin Yang

  11. Taoism and Confucianism • Two distinct responses to social, political and philosophical conditions • Confucianism greatly concerned with social relations, conduct and human society • Taoism has a more individualistic and mystical character, greatly influenced by nature
