  1. Isaiah 35 To set the stage for Chapter 35, let’s look at a series from Chapter 34. It speaks of a wilderness. It is located in “Edom”, and was part of the wilderness the Israelites crossed during the Exodus. In Isaiah 34, it seems to be another kind of wilderness as well -- mainly one created by a devastating episode of the Lord’s return to earth: Next page --

  2. Isaiah 34 11But the cormorant and the bittern shall possess it; the owl also and the raven shall dwell in it: and he shall stretch out upon it the line of confusion, and the stones of emptiness. 12They shall call the nobles thereof to the kingdom, but none shall be there, and all her princes shall be nothing. 13And thorns shall come up in her palaces, nettles and brambles in the fortresses thereof: and it shall be an habitation of dragons, and a court for owls. 14The wild beasts of the desert shall also meet with the wild beasts of the island, and the satyr shall cry to his fellow; the screech owl also shall rest there, and find for herself a place of rest. 15There shall the great owl make her nest, and lay, and hatch, and gather under her shadow: there shall the vultures also be gathered, every one with her mate. The place definitely goes back to nature. There are some zoos in Israel (Jerusalem, Haifa, Tel Aviv); maybe they get emptied out. Unicorns and satyrs probably refer to rhinos and goats; but who knows? Maybe all this nuclear stuff produces weird offspring!

  3. Isaiah 35 1The wilderness and the solitary place shall be glad for them; and the desert shall rejoice, and blossom as the rose. In the context of the return of Israel to the Land of Promise, since 1948, we have seen already in earlier chapters how this applies. The “desert”, which Israel was before the Jews re-established their homeland there in 1948, was pretty much a wasteland. Through ingenuity, technology and the blessing of God, a transfomation has taken place. That is certainly one meaning of this verse, and highly significant (as well as obvious, except to the haters). 4. Isaiah 27:6 6He shall cause them that come of Jacob to take root: Israel shall blossom and bud, and fill the face of the world with fruit. Amos 9:13-15 (where God promises to bring Israel back to their land, to make it productive, and to keep them rooted there) Verse 15 is one of my strongest Biblical “safe deposit boxes”, helping me to tell time on God’s historical, eschatological clock, while building my faith. Isaiah 35:1 (blooming like a rose; feeding most of Europe)

  5. Isaiah 35 1The wilderness and the solitary place shall be glad for them; and the desert shall rejoice, and blossom as the rose. There is another meaning (remember there are “layers” of meaning in prophecy and parable). Since the previous chapter speaks of the time of the Second Coming, and contains an oblique reference to Christ mopping up His enemies (and Israel’s) in Edom and Bozrah (as in Isaiah 63, also), it is reasonable to take this first verse as a continuation of the thoughts we discerned in Chapter 34 – I.e., that it is part of Revelation 12:13-17, with end-times Israel fleeing to the “wilderness” (how fitting that it should be the same geographical wilderness as is Exodus), for a “do-over”. In verse 1 here, the wilderness seems “glad to have them back”, and seems to “rejoice”. Notice the next verse also in this context:

  6. Isaiah 35 2It shall blossom abundantly, and rejoice even with joy and singing: the glory of Lebanon shall be given unto it, the excellency of Carmel and Sharon, they shall see the glory of the LORD, and the excellency of our God. The abundant blossoming, again, seems to foretell the agricultural miracle we are seeing in our lifetime. It also portends the blossoming of Israel spiritually, when they experience the reality of the Gospel, as spoken of in Zechariah 12:2-10 – plants can only “sing” figuratively. Only people can literally rejoice and sing. The Glory of the Lord is seen in His creation, and in God’s partnership with man in feats of engineering; but the REAL Glory of the Lord, the brightness of His Presence, will also be seen in that day, as He re-lives the pillar of fire and the pillar of cloud relationship with Israel, “in that day”.

  7. Isaiah 35 3Strengthen ye the weak hands, and confirm the feeble knees. This has been preached by good pastors to hurting people down through the 27 centuries since it was written; and it’s been true for all, and comforting. But never will it be more true than when God takes Israel under His personal care again during the Tribulation. That is when they will need it the most (Matthew 24:14-22). During the Holocaust, they were few and far between who would strengthen or confirm the weak and feeble. But in the Tribulation, God Himself will do it.

  8. Isaiah 35 4Say to them that are of a fearful heart, Be strong, fear not: behold, your God will come with vengeance, even God with a recompence; he will come and save you. 5Then the eyes of the blind shall be opened, and the ears of the deaf shall be unstopped. 6Then shall the lame man leap as an hart, and the tongue of the dumb sing: for in the wilderness shall waters break out, and streams in the desert. On the Triumphal Entry, the crowds had said “Save now!” – that is what “Hosanna” means. Jesus truly came to seek and save that which was lost, but not everybody responded (John 1:12). But “in that day”, God is coming to save not just their souls, but their physical well-being, as well. And with a vengeance against their vicious enemies. Isaiah 63 says: “It is I who speak in righteousness, mighty to save…”.

  9. Isaiah 35 5Then the eyes of the blind shall be opened, and the ears of the deaf shall be unstopped. 6Then shall the lame man leap as an hart, and the tongue of the dumb sing: for in the wilderness shall waters break out, and streams in the desert. This is Gospel. See how it parallels exactly the Isaiah 53:5, and 61:1-3; Malachi 4:2-3; and Luke 4:18, and 7:19-22 passages. Jesus came to give life more abundantly. He poured out gifts of healing, and He still does. He heals the soul; He heals the body.

  10. Isaiah 35 6Then shall the lame man leap as an hart, and the tongue of the dumb sing: for in the wilderness shall waters break out, and streams in the desert. The second part of the verse is also part prophecy, as the irrigation projects in Israel (some from the Jordan, some from ingenious desalination works) have brought forth waters, streams, and drip irrigation that the whole world is now emulating. But it, again, is Gospel, as well. The wilderness that is the unregenerate soul is watered by the Good News – as it was prophesied in Isaiah 55:1-11, fulfilled when Jesus proclaimed the refreshing the believer would carry to the world in John 4:14, and 7:37-38, and yet to lavish upon the nations in the New Heaven and New Earth, prophesied in Revelation 22:1-2; and 17. Aren’t the layers of meaning in Scripture wonderful?

  11. Isaiah 35 7And the parched ground shall become a pool, and the thirsty land springs of water: in the habitation of dragons, where each lay, shall be grass with reeds and rushes. 8And an highway shall be there, and a way, and it shall be called The way of holiness; the unclean shall not pass over it; but it shall be for those: the wayfaring men, though fools, shall not err therein. 9No lion shall be there, nor any ravenous beast shall go up thereon, it shall not be found there; but the redeemed shall walk there: 10And the ransomed of the LORD shall return, and come to Zion with songs and everlasting joy upon their heads: they shall obtain joy and gladness, and sorrow and sighing shall flee away. These are Millennium and New Heaven/New Earth scriptures. Interestingly enough, v 7 seems to cancel most (though not all) the dreadful devastation in Edom/Moab from Chapter 34. There does seem to be an eternal flame there, however (34:9) – maybe as a memorial for all to see.

  12. Isaiah 35 Therefore the redeemed of the Lord shall return, And come with singing unto Zion And everlasting joy shall be upon their heads (repeat) They shall obtain gladness and joy, And sorrow and sadness shall flee away!
