  2. History • Washington and Lee University was founded in 1749 originally with the name Augusta Academy near present day Lexington, Virginia. The school survived through a series of hardships and would have closed if not for a $20,000 endowment from George Washington. The then named Liberty Hall Academy promptly changed its name to Washington University until Robert E. Lee became president of the school in 1865. Because of his accomplishments as president, the trustees agreed to change the name again to Washington and Lee University. The school celebrated its 250th anniversary during the 1998-99 school year.
