  3. What is a data model? …simply a framework for: - guiding the development of applications - assures accurate representation of informational needs and business processes - blueprint that will describe various associations and relationships between applications and data.

  4. Why is a data model important to global health? • facilitates real time data exchanges • guides global application development • leverages national investments in spatial data infrastructure

  10. Status of Health Data Models Several countries have begun the process: - United States - Canada - Australia - New Zealand - United Kingdom

  11. Suggested Role of PHDSC • provide “home” for public health data modeling in the United States • foster private-public partnerships • advocate international cooperation • keep this valuable effort alive

  12. Suggested Role of ESRI in Partnership with the PHDSC • organize our global health users • - WHO, PAHO, DHHS, etc • sponsor HDM workshop/training events • annual ESRI health user conference events • annual PHDSC events • encourage international cooperation • - workshop at Oct 2004 event (DC)

Recommendations • eHealth Initiative • – Data Standards Working Group, June 2003 • “employ geographic standards” …all healthcare transactions should adopt standardized geographical codes published by various Federal agencies… promulgating geographic standards and geocoding standards”..following the work of: • - National Spatial Data Infrastructure (NSDI) & (GSDI) • - Federal Geographic Data consortium (FGDC) • - International Standards Organization (ISO) • - HL7
