  2. What is the GLP? • Partnership between North American & Guatemalan Rotary Clubs and the non-profit Cooperative for Education. • Provider of traditional & technological literacy programs to impoverished students in Guatemala.

  3. GLP: Project Totals • Projects: Textbooks (184 schools) Computers (51 labs) Culture of Reading Program (27 schools) • 122,700 students benefited

  4. Guatemala Literacy Project (GLP) • 14 Years • 375 Rotary Clubs • 62 Districts

  5. Textbook Program • Books in 4 subjects: math, science, social studies and Spanish. • Teachers are trained in teaching with textbooks. • Students rent all 4 books for $1.50/month. Fees are kept in a “revolving fund” which replaces the books after 5 years. • Program is financially self-sustaining after initial investment.

  7. 3 Computer Centers Program • Increases technological literacy, preparing impoverished youth for entry-level jobs. • Serves grades 7-9, providing 90 minutes/ week of hands-on instruction. • Students pay small fee, kept in a “revolving fund” which replaces the lab equipment after 6 years. • Program is financially self-sustaining after initial investment.

  8. 3 • Engages 1-6th grade kids in reading through storytelling, including acting out and creating their own stories. • Provides teachers with 2 years of training & 70-200 storybooks for their classrooms. • CORP students show 3 times more improvement on reading tests compared with students not in the program.   10. GLP Project Tours • GLP Project Tour: 10 days every February • Snapshot Tours: 6 days every February & August • Over 200 Rotarians from 4 countries have traveled as part of the GLP since 1998.
