  1. Bell Ringer • Copy the following vocabulary words and definitions into your composition books. • 1. abstruse (ab STRUSE) Definition: difficult to understand, recondite, concealed • 2. archaic (are KAY ik) Definition: antiquated, old, out of use • 3. assuage (uh SWAYJ) Definition: to ease, to mitigate, to make less painful or burdensome, to calm • 4. contentious (kun TEN shus) Definition: quarrelsome, stirring controversy • 5. depravity (deh PRAV eh tee) Definition: moral corruption, a wicked or perverse act

  2. SAT Vocabulary We will have a vocabulary quiz (formative) every Friday. After 4 weeks, we will have completed one list of 20 words. On the 5th week, we will have a vocabulary test (summative), covering the entire list. However, if your quizzes average to a 90 or above, you will not have to take the test. I will take your averaged grade instead. If you need the vocabulary lists, they are located on my webpage – macflournoy.weebly.com

  3. Cornell Notes • If you failed or did not do as well as you would have liked, it is probably for one of the following reasons: • You did not ask enough questions. • There should have been 6 total. • You did not ask the correct number of each level – you may have asked too many of one level and not enough of another. • You should have had 1 Level 1, 3 Level 2, and 2 Level 3 questions. • Remember Level 1 and 2 questions should be able to be answered by your notes. • You did not ask the questions about the notes.

  5. Bell Ringer • In your composition books, write five sentences, using each of your vocabulary words. • If you can, try to write a paragraph that makes sense as a whole, rather than writing 5 separate sentences.

  6. Biographical Sketch • Complete a brief biography of yourself . In your composition books, write the following information (in paragraph form) regarding you and your family (past and present). • Place of birth for you, your parents, and/or grandparents • Places lived – you, your parents, and/or grandparents • School attended – you, your parents, grandparents • Significant adults of people in your life • Dreams of your parents and dreams for yourself • Challenges of your parents and challenges for yourself

  7. Literary Terms • Imagery • A mental picture or sensation created by vivid language • Denotation • Dictionary definition of a word • Connotation • Idea or meaning suggested by or associated with a word or thing • Juxtaposition • the placement of two things (usually abstract concepts, though it can refer to physical objects) near each other

  8. Europe and America Highlight images that contrast the two generations presented in the poem. Complete the graphic organizer, #7 for denotation and connotation within the poem. Complete #9-10.
