  2. PUBERTY • An average female tends to go through puberty usually 2 years sooner than an average male; but, there is a great difference between individuals • Females = 11-13 years old • Males = 12-14 years old

  3. PUBERTY • Pituitary gland • Base of the brain • Controls the release of hormones in the body

  4. PUBERTY • Male hormone • Testosterone • Causes the testes to grow, mature and produce sperm cells • Enlarges penis • Enlarges scrotum

  5. PUBERTY • Males • Ejaculation • Shows that the male reproductive system is working

  6. PUBERTY Nocturnal Emission (wet dream) • Is the result of the male period • Male stores a 6 week supply of sperm • If a male does not ejaculate because of sexual intercourse or masturbation, then NE will occur • NE occurs to release decomposing sperm cells to make room for new ones

  7. PUBERTY • Female hormones • Estrogen and progesterone • Helps the ovaries grow, mature and release eggs • Menstruation • Shows that the female reproductive system is working • Monthly flow of blood (the lining of the uterus and the decomposing egg is being washed out of the body

  8. PUBERTY • Fertilization • The joining of the egg and sperm • Can occur up to 4 days after sexual intercourse because the sperm cells can survive inside the Fallopian tubes

  9. SECONDARY SEX CHARACTERISTICS • Both male and female • Increase activity of sweat and oilglands (acne) • Increase in body hair (shave) • Growth of pubic hair • Body has growth spurt • Beginning of sexual desire

  10. SECONDARY SEX CHARACTERISTICS • Male • Widening of shoulders and chest (V-shaped) • Enlargement of the voice box (lower voice) • Enlargement of the penis • Increase in facial hair • Longer and larger bones (tall)

  11. SECONDARY SEX CHARACTERISTICS • Female • Breast development • Widening of hips
