  1. The LeviceTorah

  2. The Torah • Torah means Instruction • It contains the words Moses was told to write down by G_d • Each Torah must be written by hand by an expert called a Sofer • If he makes any mistake that section will have to be started again

  3. This is the town of Levice in a country today called Slovakia

  4. In 1939 it was part of a bigger country called Czechoslovakia • Jews had been living in the area for more than 1000 years • When the German Nazi army invaded things became very difficult for the Jews

  5. The Nazi’s hated the Jews. • They discriminated against them • They burnt down their Synagogues • They finally rounded them up and put them in camps where many died.

  6. Many Jews emigrated others went into hiding • Those that were left feared they would soon be rounded up • In 1942 a group of Jews in Prague (the capital) came up with a plan to store and hide the Holy Torahs from village Synagogues • 1800 Torah Scrolls were gathered in

  7. The 1800 Torah Scrolls survived the war • But Many Jews didn’t • There were 117,500 Jews in Czechoslovakia before the war. Only 10,500 remained in 1945

  8. Some of the Jews who had lived in Levice returned home and reopened their Synagogue • But they had no Torah • So they sent for one from the store

  9. In 1948 a new communist government came to power • They did not encourage religion and the numbers in the synagogue declined

  10. By 2006 the synagogue was abandoned as all the Jews had either died of old age or left to live abroad • This picture was taken by a tourist putting his camera through a crack in the door

  11. The Levice Torah ended up in the local museum • But visitors to the museum were more interested in the castle and its collection of Roman coins • The Torah was put into store

  12. In 2009 the store room flooded • The small museum realised they couldn’t afford to restore the Torah • So they offered it to any Jewish community that could take proper care of it
