  2. About WA-WASH & KM WA-WASH stands for the West Africa Water, Sanitation and Hygiene programme (2011-2015). It is funded by USAID and managed overall by the Florida International University (FIU). The WA-WASH regroups a series of projects, managed by 10 partners in four west african countries: Burkina, Niger, Ghana and Mali (currently put on hold). Its overall purpose is to contribute to enhanced and more sustained access to rural water and sanitation services and improved hygiene behaviour. WA-WASH has a Knowledge Management (KM) component, led by IRC International Water and Sanitation Centre (IRC) and implemented by a KM team consisting of two IRC managers / coaches and one KM coordinator in each of the four programme countries. The KM component facilitates and ensures documentation of experiences and lessons learned for internal programme learning and for sharing in the wider WASH Sector and the general public.

About this photo story This photo story is the first of a series the WA-WASH KM team intends to produce and publish to visualize and document work done throughout the WA-WASH programme life-time. This photo story is about the WA-WASH KM team inception workshop held in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso in July 2012. The workshop regrouped all 6 team members for the first time.

  4. Expecting We started our 5 day inception workshop by clarifying what we would like to happen during our joint effort; and what should not happen during our workshop. Facilitators address these expectations and indicate what can be ensured and what may be not. At the end of the workshop, we revisit expectations for reflection on achievements and how a next event can be improved.

  5. Mapped Programme documents help us identify program partners and management by FIU with USAID funding. The legend indicates how we mapped KM team members and partners and indicatively their projects in the four countries involved. The KM team will serve as the glue in the WA-WASH programme.

  6. Memo board • Throughout our workshop we noted down issues that we need to remember and document; issues that we wish to address before the end of the workshop; or tasks that will need to be assigned for action afterwards. • As a lot of collaboration will happen online, a lot of effort will have to go into getting familiar with the most appropriate ICT tools: googlegroups, calendar, document storage in the clouds, etc.

To Do list • Towards the end of our five days and next to our memo-board, we establish a todo list of things to be done before we break up to practice documentation during the next week's WA-WASH Capacity Building forum and WA-WASH Partners meeting. • We made our group photo: see slide 21 • :-)

  9. Documenting documenting Process documentation throughout the WA-WASH programme is essential for learning within the programme among all partners. But also to share sector- and world-wide, so that other can benefit from what we learn.

  10. Results We extensively revisited the WA-WASH program's six expected results to identify activities, roles, resources and process management required over the coming 3 years.

  11. Refreshing breaks Short walks for food and drinks made us refresh our brains and fill up with calories for more after lunch.

Inspired bySocial media • A recent infographics "The State of Social Media, 2012" inspires us to identify appropriate platforms and channels that facilitate information management and knowledge sharing. This should provide a basis and tools to document and share to allow learning at all relevant programme levels and beyond.

  13. Channels identified A brain storm leads to identify potential channels and plat- forms to communi-cate and share both within the team and in WA- WASH. Starred ones were chosen.

  14. Video • Documentation of experiences and lessons learned in the projects of the WA-WASH programme will be crucial to allow learning and sharing sector-wide and across all levels. • Here Victor practices with a tripod to enhance the quality of video.

  15. Video interview Testimonies are one of the more powerful and convincing ways to share experiences and reflection by people involved in the programme. Here we practice with our brand new HD cams; recordings we then review and learn from.

  16. Peer-review thru the lens No feed back is better than seeing oneself playing producer - director - camera- man on shots taken by peers.

  17. Video interview • Using references and through learning by doing, we establish a first draft video interview checklist. • We note that more literature on the do's and don'ts during video interviews are required.

  18. Learned Every day we reflect on work done. We identify achievements and things that need more attention. The so called learning points.

  19. Reflection At the conclusion of our 5 day workshop we reflect on and assess things achieved by revisiting our initial expectations and evidence outcomes. While we achieve most of our objectives, we are also very aware that in particular the team collaboration on-line still needs testing and maturing. The same is true for building practice with the various collaboration and documentation tools introduced.
