  1. Biography Writing Unit

  2. What is a biography? • A biography is the story of a person’s life written by somebody else.

  3. We all have a biography!

  4. February 3-February 21 (three weeks) • For the next three weeks you will be researching a biography. You will be dedicating 15 days to complete a project about an important figure of your choice. • You will be responsible for reading, taking notes, making a timeline (if time permits), and preparing an oral presentation for Friday, February 21, 2014.

  5. What will I have to do for this project? • First, you need to select a figure you want to learn more about. • Next, you will begin taking notes about this figure under three different categories: childhood/family, struggles/obstacles, accomplishments/contributions • After you have gathered all the information about your person you will write an essay about your findings for: childhood/family, struggles/obstacles, accomplishments/contributions • Your essay must be written in the 1st person and is trying to convince the audience that YOU are the greatest person in history. We will go over specific guidelines next week!

  6. Who is worth researching? • Most biographies are written about people who have changed our world in one way or another. • People who have made a difference in the world. • There are many figures worth writing about, but not everyone has a book written about them. This you must consider when making your selection. You may want to choose someone are already familiar with. This will give you a head start on your research!

  7. We know you are a FAN! But…

  8. Selection Guidelines • We realize many of you have already thought about someone you would like to research. However, there are certain guidelines you must follow in order to make your final selection. • The figure you research must be someone who has made a significant contribution to society. • There must be a book written about them. You will not be allowed do all your research online. This means you will have to have several sources of information such as a book, newspaper article, magazine article, online sources, video documentaries, etc. • We want you to research someone from the present or past who has or is making a difference in the world. Not a pop star!

  9. So many people, how do I choose? • Think about your own interests • What do you like to do: read, play sports, travel, invent? • What genre do you enjoy reading: fiction, science, history, fantasy? • What would you like to be when you grow up? • Is there someone you admire? Who? Why? • Did you once read about someone who caught your attention? Would you like to know more about?
