  2. The Beginning • 1st Race- 1903, 60 riders • 1st Winner- Maurice Garin “The Chimney Sweep”

  3. Created as a way to sell the newspaper “L’Auto” • A publicity stunt which destroyed “Le Velo”, a competing newspaper

  4. The first racers played dirty, leaving nails on the roads and traveling by car • They even took train rides!

  5. 1905- harsh mountain roads added into path • 1910- Race path changed to trek through the Alps and the Pyrenees. • 1911- Allegations that racers were poisoning rivals!

  6. Changes in 1930 • Formation of teams of 8 members • Everyone would ride identical bikes • Today- Teams of 9

  8. The Yellow Jersey • “Le maillot jaune” For the overall points winner of the day L’Auto’s magazine pages were yellow -> advertising

  9. The Green Jersey • “Le maillot vert” • Winner of the sprints for the day • Begun in the 1930’s by a gardening company who thought green would be the best color for advertising

  10. The Polka-Dot Jersey • “Le maillot aux pois rouges” • White with red dots • For the King of the Mountain • For the best climber • A chocolate company sponsored the jersey and the design copied their candy wrappers

  11. The Red Jersey • “La lanterne rouge” • For the unlucky last rider • “Etre la laterne rouge”- to be the last • Jersey discontinued in 1989

  12. Town businesses close for the day • People picnic along the route • The race ends in Paris on L’Avenue des Champs Elysées at the Arc de Triomphe
