  2. -The word Ayurved, derived from Sanskrit letters- AYU= LIFE + VED = SCIENCE, Science of Life. -Ayurved is not only the Science of Medicine, it is the Science of life. -It is not only Science but an Art of happy and Healthy long living. -Ayurved is mother of all Medical Sciences and pathys. -Ayurved is part of Atharvaved but some of the sects of Yajurved are also dealing with the properties of Medicinal Plants and treatment of diseases. -Objective of Ayurved: To maintain Health of Healthy persons and to cure the disease of the Patients

  3. Origin of Ayurved • Daivic : Bramha has created the world. He also created the Ayurved in his Bramhasamhita. • Laukik: Rishis gathered at foothills of Himalaya and discussed the essence of treatments on different diseases and disorders. The Responsibility of compilation of data was given to Bhardwaj. He has compiled the data based on experiences and given to his most popular student Atreya. • Atreyas Students Agnivesh, Bhel, Jatukarn, Parashar, Harit and Ksharpani have created their own Samhitas.

  4. Different Samhitashave different origins of Ayurved, however, it is observed that, Ayurved has not been created by any author, Rishi or God. It is the compilation of knowledge and experiences acquired by generations after generation. • Our forefathers have learned this practice from their surroundings and from Animals. They learned Vomiting from Cats and Dogs and Enema from Birds.

  11. Mode of Drug Administration • Parpati: Extract flattened into thin sheets • Tailam: Medicated oil • Ghritam: Medicated Ghee • Bhasma: Ash • Kalp: Extract concentrated in Sugar • Kalk: Paste • Asav: Fermented Juice • Arisht: Fermented Decoction

Principles of Ayurved • Before treatment, Purvakarma, Panchakarma and Paschatkarma are undertaken. • Cause of the disease is completely removed. • Active Principle is administered along with other ingredients of Medicinal Plants. Whole plants/ plant parts are used to prepare medicine. Other Ingredients of the plant parts help in digestion of Active principle. Ex. Jaggery and Sugar. • Active Principle is diluted hence, the fluctuation in the dose may be acceptable. • The drugs are derived from Medicinal Plants, Vegetables, Fruits, Spices and Condiments, Cereals and Pulses, Minerals and Animals. They are safe without side effects. • Anupanand Pathya-apathyastrictly followed.

Pathya of Cough and Cold • Pathya: Hot water, Kernels of marking nut, Roasted Horse gram, Chicken soup, Mutton soup, Fish, Eggs, Honey, Ginger, Roasted Garlic, Alcoholic drinks etc. • Apathya: Cold water, Curd, Banana, Guava, Custard apple, Cucumber, Onion, Ice-cream, Cold drinks, Fried and oily food etc.

  16. Health Concept in Ayurved DOSHA • Vata: gaseous, dry, rough, light weight, microscopic, and movable. It is colourless. It originates below the navel in the body. If it accumulates excess in the joints, leads to arthritis, rheumatism etc. If decreases results in malfunctioning of the body as it involves in circulation.

  17. Pitta: liquid, slightly oily, heat generative, light weight, expandable, bitter, active, bad odour, yellow coloured. It originates from navel to heart. If it exceeds, results in head ach, vomiting, temperature, uneasyness etc. Kapha: solid, oily, soft, sticky, heavy, cooled, whitish, slow in action. It originates heart onwards. If it exceeds, results in cough and cold. If decreased, results in dryness, pain in joints etc.
