  1. Matterville Mystery Join our investigative team in solving the case of the missing electron

  2. The Case Today our investigative team is traveling to Matterville to assist the town in locating an escaped electron. The renegade electron has the town divide by families and “social” groups. It is believed that this electron has joined alliances with a neighboring group.

  3. Upon arrival in Matterville, we will meet with the local CSI team, The Adam’s family, who will brief our team on the case. The members of the CSI team, Pauli Proton, Eddie Electron, and Newton Neutron are experts in the fields of electron cloud navigation, sublevel navigation, and Chemical bonding, respectfully. Their expertise will be key in solving this case.

  4. The perpetrator The alleged electron is believed to be a member of the Alkali family; more specifically a member of the Rudy Rubidium clan. The perp has created chaos in the community by jumping several sublevels and refusing to come back to ground state configuration. This defiance of family alliance as led to rumors of a new compound being created.

  5. This electron is to be considered unstable and reactive. Use extreme caution when attempting to capture the perp. The electron has been know to try bonding with other atoms in attempt to disguise and avoid capture and has an extensive rap sheet: http://www.chemicalelements.com/elements/rb.html We have arrived in Matterville; let’s do a quick review of the atoms characteristics.

  6. Background Review

  7. We will begin our review by logging into the CSI’s data base Brain Pop using our secret username: Jefferson and password: student. http://www.brainpop.com/science/matter/atoms

  8. Now that we have reviewed the parts of the atom; lets take a few minuets to review the orbital's and bonding characteristics. Lets start with the orbital's. http://www.chem4kids.com/files/atom_orbital.html

  9. Now lets move on to bonding. http://www.chem4kids.com/files/atom_bonds.html

  10. Now that we understand the characteristics of the atom, there is one last area to investigate: the groups/families of Matterville. Each family/group is unique and has their own characteristics (agenda). The missing electron is hiding out within one of these families.

  11. The Periodic Table Lets begin by reviewing the Periodic Table. http://www.chemicalelements.com/show/name.html

  12. Due to the unwavering determination of our investigative team; we have collected sufficient evidence to solve the case. Within which family is the missing Rudy Rubidium electron hiding? Solving the Case

  13. Assessment Congratulations on solving the Case! Now that the case is solved; there’s one last loose end to tie: The police report. Turn in a 2-3 page report detailing how you solved the case. Include in the report discussion of : • Atomic structure • Relationship between atom characteristics and the periodic table. • Feel free to include photos, eyewitness accounts, and evidence. • If desired the web site http://www.readwritethink.org/materials/comic/index.html can be used to create your report in the form of a comic book. • Be creative and have fun!
