  1. Physical Transformation of Residential into Commercial Residentialin Rural Tourism of Pentingsari, Sleman Yogyakarta, Indonesia Presented in Rural Research and Planning Group 5th, August 26 2014 JoesronAlieSyahbana Department of Urban Regional Planning Faculty of Engineering Diponegoro University AtiekSuprapti Department of Architecture Faculty of Engineering Diponegoro University Anna Pudianti Doctorate Programme of Architecture and Urbanism, Engineering Faculty,DiponegoroUniversity

  2. Various quality of rural development Various speeds of development Indicators used to classify the rural area The important of rural-urban linkage (location, people, and activities as economic, social and cultural transformation engine (Tacoli) The different power to transform even though they have similar rural-urban linkage Rural transformed in different direction and strength  How it can happen? What is the background for the successful transformation of rural area

  3. To explore the reason, it is important to know the process of transformation itself. Based on Straus definition, transformation differs from change. Change is observed with the visual analytical basis (known as surface structure), whereas transformation is something inside or deep in unconsciousness mind which encourages such changes to be happened (known as deep structure).

  4. This study aims to explore the factors from different side of transformation. Physical transformation as the surface-structure is studied to find deep-structure of transformation.

  5. Methodology The qualitative empirical research study was applied to explore transformation background The physical changes are identified and explored to find the background of the change based on in-depth interview with the owner and key-person who lead the process of transformation.

  6. Location of the Case • Isolated village • Limited access • Main attraction of natural green village and local culture heritage

  7. New Buildings Function in Pentingsari Village

  8. Homestay in Rural Residential of Pentingsari

  9. Closed modern rural house • Seperate entrance • Seperate area for tourist and the owner

  10. Opened modern rural house

  11. Opened traditional rural house

  12. Pendapa, • functioned as formal activities (meetings, ceremonies, arts performances and so on • functioned as public area of the house. Although located on the front, • the pendapa is not a reception room

  13. 2. Pringgitan • connecting hallway (hall connection) between the pendapa with omahnjero. • usually uses as informal verandah of the house, but sometimes in a special occasion is functioned as an area of puppet show • the regular guests watch the puppet show in pringgitan from the pendapa whereas the honored guests from the omahnjero.

  14. 3. Omah Njero (Dalem) a. senthong kiwa (left part) can be used as a bedroom or family space as a repository of rice and farming equipment. b. senthong tengah (krobongan) (middle part). It is a room that became the center of all parts of the house. It used to be a sacred space that is often the venue for the ceremony of family. This place is also a storage room of family heritage objects. c. senthong tengen (right part), has the same function with Sentong kiwa 4. Gandhok, additional buildings surrounding the rear sides of the building core used as bedrooms.

  15. Javanese traditional concept the Javanese distinguishes hierarchy of the space in one side but in another side they also admit the multi function of their house especially in occasional event such as wedding ceremony.

  16. Discussion • The phenomenon of transformation at the micro level is similar to what is applied in a Javanese traditional concept. • In a private area such as in omah njero is sometimes used as a semi-private activity because they invite distinguished guests to get into their private area, whereas in an opened traditional rural house type they also do the same thing (treating their guests as honored guests or even as a member of their family) • The first important thing in this initial process of transformation is the entrepreneurial spirit of the villagers itself. It is clearly seen that the villagers enjoyed to participate in the competition, including competition among other villages. This is the primary capital to initiate changes in their village. • The physical change of the village is a consequence of their desire to change their rural isolation by using it as the strengths of their village. Their village holds unspoiled nature and rural atmosphere that have not affected by the urban life style.

  17. The village is still isolated and the house is not really change. They only expand additional space for homestay. • The main change in their house is the activity with their guest. • They manage the presence of guest by treating them as the honour guest or family member as they apply in the traditional concept. It is one of the interesting ways in adapting the change. They treat change as if there is no change. This is called by Strauss as transformation.

  18. Conclusion The study has highlighted several issues regarding the physical characteristics and the process of transformations i.e. • initial transformation of Pentingsari is influenced by competitive character of the villagers, • there are three types of transformation in micro level (the opened modern and traditional house, and the closed modern house) , • the deep-structure of change is that the villagers treat the tourist as their family member so they treat change as if there is no change • the physical transformation implies the power of transformation which indicates the continuity of rural development.

  19. The research clearly shows the importance of exploring the physical transformation proccess to find the power of the transformation. The way how the community treat the change influences the continuity and the orientation of the transformation.  the case study research in other rural tourism villages has to be conducted to strengthen the finding.
