  1. Applying Strategies, Building Skills Using TOPIC, SCOPE, and PURPOSE to understand multiple passages

Focusing on Speed and Details • Since most of us are not the speediest of readers, it is important that when you read passages for the ACT, you are keeping these three details in mind: • Topic • Scope • Purpose • In these sample passages, try to keep SPEED in mind and skim the passages for the MAIN IDEAS and SUPPORTING DETAILS. You can always refer back to the passages later!

  3. Now that you have read, you will meet in groups • In your groups, write on your poster the TOPIC, SCOPE, and PURPOSE. • For each element, find textual evidence that supports your answers!

  4. Passage #1 • TOPIC: -GLOBAL WARMING • SCOPE: -It is nearly impossible to measure slight variations in global temperatures; therefore, global warming is not a serious issue. • PURPOSE: -To show that there is no way to prove that humans are responsible for the increase in temperatures, nor should we expect catastrophic consequences from minor temperature increases.

  5. Passage #2 • TOPIC: -King Louis XIV • SCOPE: -His accomplishments and explanation of power. • PURPOSE: -To identify the lasting effects of his reign both at home and abroad, potentially including the French Revolution.

  6. Passage #3 • TOPIC: -Frank Franzetta’s art • SCOPE: -The unique style of his lifelike, ,yet extreme characters that transcends his art’s commercial roots. • PURPOSE: -To express the opinion that Franzetta has influenced a generation of artists, and one day his work will be studied like that of the great masters is today.

  7. Passage #4 • TOPIC: -Charles A. Lindbergh • SCOPE: - His less than impressive formal education. • PURPOSE: - To show that his New York-to-Paris flight was a mark of his personal determination and ingenuity, despite his lack of education.

  8. Passage #5 • TOPIC: -The first Americans • SCOPE: -There is considerable disagreement over who was here first. • PURPOSE: -To point out that science has proven that people were here for thousands of years prior to the discovery of North America by formal expeditions.
