Brucellosis Surveillance in Hunter-Killed Elk • Monitor brucellosis in non-feedground herds • Surveillance geared toward hunter-killed cow elk • 6000 – 8000 Blood collection kits mailed to hunters in target hunt areas (limited quota) • ~600 – 900 useable samples (40-50-50) • Statewide coverage every 4-5 years

  3. 2012 Surveillance • Developed with WLSB input/support • Surrounding DSA / northeastern quarter • Increased sample collections • Hunter Management Coordinators • Blood/tissue sample technician • Opportunistic sampling • ~10,000 Blood collection kits

  4. 2012 Surveillance Results • 1,437 samples received • 894 (62%) suitable for testing • 8.9% seroprevalence in northern herd units • 13.3% in 2011, 15.3% in 2010 • 0% seroprevalence in southern herd units • 5.5% in 2011, 3.2% in 2010

  5. Target Area Serology • Elk hunt areas surrounding positive cattle herds –cows only. ( ) = 2011 data

  6. Hunt Area 40 • Positives • Bull harvested near Bear Creek drainage • Cow harvested on Bald Mountain • Moderate to strong titers • 601 Blood sample kits mailed • 58 Samples returned – 26 suitable for testing • 13 Samples tested in 2006 – 40 in 2011

  7. 2013 Surveillance • Intensive surveillance in/around HA 40 • Continue monitoring DSA • Target areas within DSA (61 – 63) • Limited quota HA surrounding boarder • Increased sample collections • Hunter Management Coordinators • Opportunistic sampling • Continue statewide surveillance (southeast)
