WARM UP: CELL REVIEW

WARM UP: CELL REVIEW. 1) Which type of cell does NOT have a membrane bound nucleus? 2) Which organelle makes energy for the cell? 3) Which organelle is the control center? 4) This cell part protects the cell and decides what can enter and what can leave.

  1. WARM UP: CELL REVIEW • 1) Which type of cell does NOT have a membrane bound nucleus? • 2) Which organelle makes energy for the cell? • 3) Which organelle is the control center? • 4) This cell part protects the cell and decides what can enter and what can leave. • 5) This organelle cleans up all damaged cell parts. • EC. This organelle helps the cell reproduce and divide.

  2. Notes # 5: Cells and organelles

  3. Cell • Makes up organisms. • Smallest unit of life. • 2 types • prokaryotic: • no membrane bound organelles • eukaryotic: • have membrane bound organelles

  4. Organelle • “little organs” of the cell • Units inside the cell with a specific job

  5. (Protein: • differentiates one cell from another) • Nucleus: • control center of the cell • Contains DNA / info • Plasma membrane • decides what enters / leaves the cell • Ribosome: • make proteins • Rough endoplasmic reticulum: • houses ribosomes • makes proteins used inside &outside cell • makes lipids

  6. Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum • detoxifies cell • makes lipids • Golgi body / apparatus: • packages and delivers proteins in and out of cell • Vacuole • storage of extra water and nutrients • Lysosome • breaks down old cell parts • Mitochondria: • Makes energy (ATP) for the cell

  7. Cytoplasm: • Fluid in cell containing water, nutrients used for metabolism • Centriole: • needed for cell division / reproduction • *Chloroplast: • makes food for plants • photosynthesis occurs here • *Cell wall: • rigid structure outside plasma membrane • support and protection for plant cells
