  1. Citropsis articulata leaves: A potential phytomedicine for treatment of Male Erectile Dysfunction associated with Testosterone Deficiency P. Vudriko 1, M. K. Baru1, J. Kateregga1, J. Ndukui1 1College of Veterinary Medicine, Animal Resources and Biosecurity, Makerere University Background Erectile dysfunction (ED) is associated with low serum testosterone levels in males. According to Caruthers (2001), 20-50% of healthy men aged 50-70 years have sub-normal levels of testosterone. Citropsis articulata (locally known as Omuboro) is used by communities in Uganda to manage ED. This study investigated the aphrodisiac properties of leaves of this plant. Table 2: Phytochemical profiles of the ethanolic leave extracts of C. articulata Materials and Methods: Study design: Experimental study with adult wistar albino rats; Identification and extraction(70% ethanol); Phytochemistry (Harbone, 1998); monitor mounting frequency; Testosterone assay withECOBAS E911 immunolyser machine Results Table 1: Effect of extract on Testosterone level and mounting frequency Value expressed as Mean±SEM; p value (i=0.0762; j=0.001; k=0.001; d=0.0321; e=0.0047 and f=0.001); n=4 Discussion The results indicate that the extract has the ability to influence synthesis and release of testosterone from the testis into blood circulation. This is attributed to the presence of phytochemicals such as saponins and coumarins, that are reported (Ang etal., 2004) to increase testosterone level by increasing LH release. In conclusion, increase in mounting frequency and serum testosterone level in the Citropsis extract treated groups corroborates with the traditional use of this plant in Uganda to manage erectile dysfunction.
