  1. AS Level – Week 8 Theory Module 1 The Nature and Classification of Skill and Ability

  2. Classification of Skill The process of classifying skills is commonly based on the use of a continuum or sliding scale. This allows a general interpretation of the characteristics of the skills to take place and for several skills to be compared at the same time. Continuum – a series of gradations between two extremes. The classification continua are: • open/closed continuum • gross/fine continuum • self-paced/externally paced continuum • discrete/serial/continuous continuum. Open/closed continuum This continuum is based on the influence the environment has on the production of the skilled movement. Any number of factors may influence the performance. Example; position of players, proximity of the crowd playing conditions and surface.

  3. However a closed skill can be executed within a mainly open environment. Example; a player taking a penalty (closed skill) which is performed in isolation from the main cut and thrust of the game. Gross/fine continuum This continuum is based on the amount of muscular movement and the precision required during the execution of the skill. Table Many skills combine the two elements during different phases of the action. Example; a cricket bowler’s run-up would be classed as a gross skill, while the delivery action of the wrist and hand would be classed as a fine skill. Self-paced/externally paced continuum This continuum is based on the amount of control the performer has over the execution and timing of the movement. This is based on two factors: the timing and initiation of the movement as well as the actual speed/rate of the movement.

  4. Discrete/serial/continuous continuum This continuum is based on the relationship between the subroutines and identification of the beginning and end of the movement. Table Task Place the skills listed below in the correct place on each of the four continua. Justify your reasons for each answer. • Basketball set shot • Receiving a pass in netball • High Jump • Tennis rally • Cycling race • Gymnastics vault • Hockey dribble • Snooker shot
