  1. The Common Ion Effect

  2. The Common Ion Effect • If a new substance, having a common ion, is added to an already saturated salt solution, then some of the original salt will precipitate out of solution as solid crystals thus reducing the solubility of the original salt. This is called the COMMON ION EFFECT! Solution of NaI added Crystals of PbI2 appear Saturated solution of PbI2

  3. The Common Ion Effect Ex.1) If the following system: Li2CO3(s) 2 Li1+(aq) + CO32–(aq) is at equilibrium and some Li1+ is added to the system, then by the time the new equilibrium is established, the concentration of CO32- will have ____________ and the amount of solid Li2CO3 will have ____________. The equilibrium system will have “shifted to the _______” and will have favored the ___________ reaction which is called ______________. decreased increased left reverse crystallization

  4. The Common Ion Effect Ex.2) If the following system: NaCl(s) Na1+(aq) + Cl1-(aq) is at equilibrium and some KCl is added to the system, then by the time the new equilibrium is established, the concentration of Na1+ will have __________ and the amount of solid NaCl will have ____________. The equilibrium system will have “shifted to the ________” and will have favored the __________ reaction which is called _______________. decreased increased left reverse crystallization

  5. The Common Ion Effect Ex.3) If some AgCl is added to a saturated aqueous solution of AgNO3 then the solubility of the AgNO3 will (1) increase (2) decrease (3) remain the same Ex.4) If some KCl is added to a saturated aqueous solution of NaNO3 then the solubility of the NaNO3 will (1) increase (2) decrease (3) remain the same AgNO3(s) Ag1+(aq) + NO31-(aq) NaNO3(s)Na1+(aq) + NO31-(aq)

  6. The Common Ion Effect Ex.5) If some LiBr is added to a saturated aqueous solution of MgBr2 then the concentration of aqueous magnesium ions will (1) increase (2) decrease (3) remain the same Ex.6) If some LiBr is added to a saturated aqueous solution of MgBr2 then the concentration of aqueous bromide ions will (1) increase (2) decrease (3) remain the same MgBr2(s) Mg2+(aq) + 2 Br1-(aq) MgBr2(s) Mg2+(aq) + 2 Br1-(aq)
