  1. Dhaka Multi-lane Road Tunnel Feasibility Study Project (Jahangir gate tunnel) Insert Heading Samiul Hossain, SMEC Project Director 26 September 2013

  2. Content • Objective • Flowchart • Survey & Investigation + Data Collection • Road Layout / Traffic Survey • Options • Costs and Economics • Recommendation • Animation

  3. Objective • Bifurcating Mohammodpur bound traffic from Farmgate bound traffic by channelizing traffic flow • Improve transport access and mobility • Reducing traffic congestion • Integrated traffic management

  4. Flowchart

  5. Survey & Investigation • Traffic Survey • Environmental and Social Survey • Topographical Survey • Geotechnical Survey • Stakeholder consultation

  6. Engineering Appraisal • Traffic modeling • Technical appraisal • Economic and financial appraisal • Stakeholder consultation • Environmental and social safeguards

  7. Road Layout / Traffic Survey AADT (Annual Average Daily Traffic): It is the total volume of vehicle traffic of a highway or road for a year divided by 365 days. AADT is a useful and simple measurement of how busy the road is.

  8. Investigated Options

  9. Existing Road Network (Option 1)

  10. Surface Crossing of Airport (Option 2)

  11. Road Stops with boom gates while aircraft land and take off

  12. Cut & Cover Tunnel under runway only (Option 3)

  13. Runway Tunnel

  14. Twin Tunnels Steep ramps 7% (Option 4)

  15. Twin Tunnels

  16. Twin Tunnel Long ramps 4% (Option 5)

  17. Twin Tunnels

  18. Underpass of Kazi Nazrul Islam Ave and Flyover connection to Mohakhali Flyover (Option 6)

  19. Underpass Plus

  20. Flyover

  21. Option 7 Note: Option 7 is 2 simple underpasses- one at the Prime Minister’s office intersection lights on Kazi Najrul Islam Avenue and another at the link road network junction near IDB Bhaban. Detailed engineering investigation was not done for this option as the underpasses are near PM’s residence and are not feasible.

  22. Costs and Economics

  23. Recommendations • Option 2 and 3 • not workable as it would hamper airport’s security • Option 6 • Constructible • Acceptable by stakeholders • Most viable Economically and Financially • Option 6 recommended

  24. Option 6 detail

  25. Animation – Recommended option 6 Tunnel Animation

  26. The End Thank You
