ATRE’S MISSION • To keep California competitive as a national leader in advanced transportation (automotive, aviation, and rail) and renewable energy technologies • Advanced Transportation: To facilitate the training of technicians for the rapidly evolving, technology-driven transportation industry including: • Alternate fuels, e.g., hybrid, electric, fuel-cell, CNG—for automotive, medium/heavy duty trucks, transit, fleets, AG • Develop programs to support evolving technologies: autonomous and connected vehicle systems, drones, battery storage • Aviation: facilitating regional discussions: faculty and employers • Renewable Energy Industry (Solar, Wind, Geothermal):To focus on the skills needed by students, faculty, incumbent workers • Special Initiatives: Auto ESL, Pathways, Internships, Soft Skills, SWP • To improve the environment and stimulate the economy.

  3. Examples of What We Do • Train students and incumbent workers in maintenance and repair skills for: • Automotive Motorcycle • Medium/heavy duty trucks • Body & Collision • Aviation, Drones • Rail and Transit systems.

  4. RenewablesEnergy Jerry Bernstein, former DSN, led the development of the solar PV installation training programs in the region with CCSF Emerging Opportunities: Clean Energy Battery storage Micro grids.

Trends Impacting Auto Industry • Automotive Technologies have been rapidly changing and requiring the review and modification of curriculum • New powertrains to accommodate electric and hybrid • On-board electronic systems expanding to include connective and extensive Infotainment systems • Safety features: lane detection, blind spot detection, collision avoidance systems • Autonomousand Connected systems technologies • Large Scale Retirements—employers and fleets poaching employees; Major shortfalls looming. College programs report that they do not have enough students to meet employer demands. • Opportunities across broader career spectrum: sales, finance, social media, web-based marketing, service writing.

Current Projects • ATRE is working with 12 statewide college auto programs: IDRC--to review Alternate Fuel Vehicle (AFV) Curriculum with auto employers: • Soft Skills: Employers and Faculty from 12 colleges identified the technical and ‘soft skills’ that students need to succeed in these increasingly technical careers. • New World of Work Training, August at CCSF: Faculty from 17 colleges participated and certified to embed the NWoW modules in AFV curriculum or structured as pilot courses. • California Energy Commission, ATRE awarded 9 colleges grants to enhance their AFV training programs, including CCSF. • Automotive Internships: facilitating the structure and implementation of auto technician internships with automotive employers • Drone-related courses and programs are being developed at: City College, Gavilan, Hartnell, Mission, Ohlone, SRJC, Solano, W.Valley • Micro grid power generation and battery storage in development.
