YELLOW: • Warning • Checked off in Friday’s Newsletter to parents ORANGE: • Recess Detention • Note sent home that day to parents RED: • Recess Detention • Phone call home that day to parents • Conduct Form completed for Principals

  14. …Positive Pickles • Each day one boy and one girl (whose cards have remained green) are chosen as our “Pickles of the Day” for the following day. These students are allowed to “pick” special privileges, such as sitting in our special chair, choosing our brain break, etc. • If all students in class remain on green, we receive a letter towards spelling out a special reward, such as an ice pop party, pajama day, etc. • Additionally, students whose cards remain on green for the entire week are permitted to participate in free center time on Fridays • Students also try to achieve having their group number written on our class grid to increase their probability for prizes

  15. Homework • Please try to foster independence, allowing the child to attempt the homework on his/her own. • HOMEWORK CODING: SH= Some help TH=Total help Please code in top right hand corner of page • Average/approximate time your child should be spending on HW = 30-40 minutes (10 minutes per grade level…10 x 3) • We cannot distribute HW ahead of time if a child is going to miss school. The amount of allotted makeup time will correlate to the amount of time your child is absent (ie., absent two days=two days to make up the missed work).

  16. Homework Policy • FIRST missed assignment of the month = warning, make up assignment • SECOND missed assignment of the month = warning, make up assignment during recess • THIRD missed assignment of the month = make up assignment during recess, parental communication/collaborative plan for prevention • Extenuating Circumstances: Please let me know! • Long Term HW or projects: Not excused My goal is to teach students to use their time wisely, chunk parts of assignments at home, and avoid becoming procrastinators!  • POSITIVE INCENTIVE: Whole class reward of spelling out “NO HOMEWORK” = 2 No HW Passes

  17. What? Homework on the weekends?! • Your child may have mentioned that I give homework on Fridays. The homework I may assign will be extremely minimal. • Typical weekend homework may be completing unfinished work from class, writing 3-4 words in rainbow colors three times each, or simply reading/practicing vocabulary words. • No more than 15-20 minutes!

  18. Grading* • 90 – 100 = VG (Very Good) …A • 80 – 89 = G (Good) …B • 70 – 79 = S (Satisfactory) …C • 65 – 69 = M (Minimal effort) …D • 0 – 64 = U (Unsatisfactory) …F • EXTRA CREDIT/ENRICHMENT WORK will allow your child to sway his/her grade to the higher of the two if it is borderline

  19. Birthdays • Please check with the school nurse and myself before bringing in birthday treats, due to class and school allergies. WE DO HAVE PEANUT ALLERGIES IN OUR CLASSROOM THIS YEAR. • A class list has been provided for party invitations, if needed. Please be aware that birthday invitations can ONLY be distributed if the entire class is invited. The only exception to this is if you would like to invite ALL the boys or ALL the girls. Thank you for your cooperation in this matter, as we do not want to hurt any children’s feelings.

  20. Snack • Third grade has the earliest lunch: 11:26-12:11 • Because of this, we encourage you to send your child in with a snack that may be eaten near the end of the day. • Children may NOT share snacks or be given snacks due to allergies; your cooperation is appreciated. • PEANUT FREE PLEASE…

  21. Star Student • Star students will be chosen weekly or bimonthly (depending on our calendar) • Your child will come home with three sheets of information to complete, along with an example of what is expected. • Please send in photos (that will be returned but may not remain completely in tact!) • A poster is optional! If your child does not glue the information on a poster, please just cut out the materials and place them in a Ziploc bag so that I can staple them to our bulletin board.

PARCC(Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers) BASIC OVERVIEW: • Aligned to the Common Core Standards, which were adopted by New Jersey in 2010. • Replaces NJ ASK in ELA and Math • Grades 3-8  • Digital (computer-based) platform • Two assessments per year (results are combined): - Performance-based (PBA) tasks given in March and April - End of Year given in May

  26. …PARCC • What will I do?Prepare your students thoroughly for the content that they will be exposed to on the assessment. All learning goals are correlated to the COMMON CORE STATE STANDARDS. Our school librarian will also assist your children in becoming comfortable with the necessary computer skills that they will need when taking the assessment (click and drag, highlighting, etc.) • What can you do? Visit this Monroe Township link: http://monroenj.schoolwires.com/Page/9084 which will also take you to the PARCC website. There you will find a “Parent” section with FAQs, sample test items, and games that you can play to prepare your child. It would also be helpful if you gave your child frequent opportunities to get comfortable with the keyboard, mouse and other computer skills (if possible).

  27. STAFF We are fortunate to have many resourceful and caring staff available to work with your children! • Mrs. Quinn (Science and Social Studies) • Mrs. Tessler • Mrs. Romano • Mrs. Arcado • Ms. Maria (lunch para) • Ms. Colflesh will conduct guidance lessons periodically with our class

  28. Sign Language • Your child may have mentioned that we have been using some sign language in class. Disclaimer:I am not a certified sign language specialist! I simply have some experience with sign language from a few advanced college courses, so I use sign language as a fun motivator in class. I find that sign language helps my students focus on directions, remain engaged on our lessons, etc.. • It is very possible that some of the signs we are using are not completely accurate, yet they make sense for communicating quietly in class. If you know anyone who is an expert in this area, please let me know and I would LOVE to reach out to them!

  29. How can YOU help?* • Homework – Responsibility and Accountability (Review your child’s learning preferences that I have enclosed in your packet, and plan their homework routine accordingly.) • Practice Math Facts (After establishing number sense with multiplication and division, I use many mnemonics/tricks/silly stories to help students memorize their facts…please have them teach them to you so you can practice together!) • Encourage at least15 minutes of reading every night • Encourage the use of broader vocabulary in every day conversation Study Island (preparation for PARCC content) http://www.studyisland.com Pearson Success Net (On-Line Math) http://www.pearsonsuccessnet.com (I have set up Pearson for grades 2, 3, and 4 so that my students can practice both review and challenge skills at their own levels) Your child's login for both websites is otstudentID   (type ot, then your child's 6 digit lunch code) Your child's password is ot123456

  30. ????????????????QUESTIONS? • We have an inquisitive bunch of students this year! Please model their procedure of writing any questions you may have on the index card provided. You can place your question card in my “Notes for Mrs. Eosso” basket and I will either email you a response, send a note home with your child, or call you if necessary.

  31. THANK YOU!!! Thank you for taking the time to come out and learn about your child’s academic program tonight.
