  2. What is a generator? • That produces electric current that is usually rotating a conductor in a magnetic field. • It converts mechanical energy to electrical energy. The reverse conversion electrical energy into mechanical energy is mostly done by a motor.

  3. How does a generator work? • All electrical generators produce an magnetic field to produce an output voltage, which drives the current to the load. • The magnetic field is to also produce a mechanical twisting force the motion by a prime mover.

  4. Divisions • Generators are divided by AC and DC, which is alternating current and direct current groups. • Those two groups can be subdivided into machines that use permanent magnet to produce a magnetic field and those using field windings. • Those groups are subdivided that relates to the type of prime mover and the speed of an generator.

  5. Size and Speed • Large generator are used for driven by a steam or a hydraulic turbines, by diesel engine, and sometimes by electric motors. • Speed of a generator varies from several thousand rotation per minute for like steam turbines to very low speeds for hydraulic or wind turbines.

  6. Magnetic Flux • Field structure of a generator includes the magnetic flux is needed for energy conversion. • Permanent magnets can be used to provided in a magnetic field in a small generator. • DC field windings are economical and permit changes in the magnetic flux and output voltage. DC generators the field structure must be stationary to permit rotating mounting for commutator and armature windings. It only has to have two lead wires cause field windings are low voltage and power.
