  2. Questions • What draws your attention first in this picture? • Why do you think the elephants are in the desert? • What point is the artist trying to get out about KayaKing jumbo peanuts?

  3. Answers • The elephants in the middle of the picture. • To contrast their natural environment and draw the audience’s attention. • These peanuts are delicious and massive.

  4. Background • KayaKing is an Indonesian company that sells peanuts. • KayaKing comes from “Kacang” which means peanuts. • This particular advertisement was from the Orang Tua Group, who is promoting the product.

  5. The Audience This advertisement appeals to everyone who enjoys peanuts, especially jumbo peanuts.

  6. Appeal: Logos This advertisement has a logical appeal, or logos. In reality an elephant would not be choking on a peanut and would especially not be picked up by another giving it the Heimlich maneuver. Also, this breed of elephants don’t live in the desert, they tend to live in grassy areas.

  7. Appeal: Ethos The source is credible because KayaKing is being promoted by a well known Indonesian group called the Orang Tua Group.

  8. Appeal: Pathos When looking at the picture, the audience could draw either humor or sympathy from the elephants. One could see it as ironic, others could see it as sad. I myself literally laughed when I saw the ad.

  9. Symbolism The artist used elephants for this ad because stereotypically we see elephants eating peanuts. Elephants do enjoy peanuts but not as much as what we see or imagine.

  10. Composition The artist used a landscape picture of a sunny day in the middle of the desert to contrast against the elephant’s gray skin and the yellow bag of peanuts in the bottom left corner.

  11. Technique The artist put the elephants in the middle of the desert because the viewer may not notice it at first, but it makes them wonder why they seem so out of place, later realizing the elephants are not in their natural habitat. Also, these happen to be Indian elephants, as the product is from an eastern country the elephants natural habitat is grassy areas rather than a desert. This draws the attention and interest of the viewer even more. The fact the these elephants are performing the Heimlich maneuver adds a comical feel to the whole ad which makes the viewer look into the actual product.
