  2. Facts • In the United States, 16.2 percent of pregnant teens age 15 to 17 have use an illicit drug in 2009-2010 • In 2011, a NIDA-funded study reported the following percentages of 8th, 9th, 10th and 12th graders had abused these drugs at least once in the past year

  3. What are Stimulants? • A CNS stimulant, also known as psychomotor stimulants or uppers • Are a class of drugs that speed up physical and mental processes. They temporarily make patients feel more alert and improve mood

  4. Type of Stimulants • Cocaine • Methamphetamine • Amphetamies • Methyphenidate • Nicotine • MDMA (Ecstasy) • Caffeine • Diet Pills • Ritalin

  6. Therapeutic Uses of Prescription Stimulants • Treat medical conditions such as attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) • Attention-deficit disorder (ADD) • Narcolepsy • Appetite suppressant

  7. Neurological Effects • Changes the way the brain functions and may lead to severe memory loss • Stimulants impair the ability of specific brain circuits to change in response to experiences

  8. Physiological Effects • Increased Alertness • Heightened Awareness • Agitation • Upset stomach • Headache • Dehydration • Euphoria • Feelings of invincibility • Exaggerated sense of ability • Hostility • Anger • Panic
