  2. What is the Good Citizenship Award for Eagle Scouts? a. It’s a certificate that is presented by the Marine corps League to those young men in the Boy Scouts of America who have achieved Scoutings highest rank, Eagle Scout.

  3. Why Should your Detachment participate in this program? a. To congratulate and give recognition to those members of the Boy Scouts of America who have fulfilled the requirements and obtained the highest rank in Scouting. b. To have the Eagle Scout become aware that the skills he has mastered in order to become an Eagle Scout are also held in very high regards by the Marine Corps the Marine Corps League and Corporations throughout the United States and around the World. c. To fulfill part of the Marine Corps League Mission, which is to preserve the traditions, promote the interest, and perpetuate the history of the United States Marine Corps. In this instance, to keep the Marine Corps and Marine Corps League in the public eye and do good work in our communities.

  4. How participating in this program could benefit your Detachment? a. Exposure in your community.(pictures in the paper, guests at the ceremony) b. Having a network of possible volunteers, to assist you with different functions. c. Community support of your Detachments programs and fundraisers. d. Recruiting possibilities. e. Young Marines program. f. Getting more Detachment members involved with the Detachments functions.

  5. Possible benefits to the Scout Troop • Provides a means for the Scouts to complete community service hours needed for advancement. ( Toys for Tots, Veterans Day Ceremonies, Memorial Day Ceremonies ECT.) • The Detachment could assist Scouts with getting Merit Badges. • The Detachment could adopt a Scout each year and send him to Scout Camp.

  6. The Cost to your Detachment a. The certificate, $2.00 from the MCL ships store. b. Possibly a frame ($3.00 Wal-Mart) or folder ($2.00 Ships Store) to put the certificate in. c. Your time involved in presenting the certificate, one or two members and most Court of Honors last about an hour. d. Possibly the cost of Scout Camp.

  7. How does a Detachment start a Good Citizenship awards Program for Eagle Scouts? a. Hold a vote at a Detachment meeting to see if your Detachment will support this program. (because of the monetary cost to do this program) b. Get a volunteer to be your Detachment Eagle Scout Coordinator. Once this is done they need to contact the Department Eagle Scout Coordinator so he/ she can get his/her contact information. It would be helpful if your Coordinator is already affiliated with the Boy Scouts but it is not necessary. c. Contact your local Boy Scout District Executive and Scoutmasters. (See BSA council sheet for contact info enclosure 1). Find out when the Scoutmaster Roundtable is held and see if you can attend one to do a presentation on the Eagle Scout Program. d. Talk to the District Eagle Scout board of review Chairman and Scout Masters to find out when Scouts have achieved their Eagle Rank and when their Court of Honor will be held.

  8. What do you do at a Court of Honor • Be in a proper Marine Corps League uniform (preferably the Casual dress uniform, red blazer) • Have a Good Citizenship Award for Eagle Scout filled out and ready to be presented. • Find out when you are to present the award. (usually they will have a person who is running the program that will assist you with this) • Give your remarks ( Court of Honor Script Enclosure 2) • Present the award. • Take pictures.

  9. How does your Detachment Keep a record of the Eagle Scout Certificates presented and who should receive the report? • It’s best to use an application so you can have the Scouts information for the certificate, Scoutmasters name, Troop # and location of the court of honor, this will also help you keep a record of who and how many Eagle Scout Certificates your Detachment has presented (see application enclosure 3). • Reports are sent in quarterly from the Detachment to the Department Eagle Scout Coordinator. The Department sends in reports semi annually to National. (see reports enclosure 4) Note the quarters on the report they are different than the Department, this is so I can keep in time with my National reports.

  11. Court of honor script Eagle Scout Court of Honor Script  Good (evening, afternoon).I am _________________________ with the Marine Corps League Tri-County Detachment #1262 from Rocky Mount NC. It is a great honor, privilege and pleasure to be here at the Eagle Court of Honor for (scouts name first & last) _________________________.  _________________ (Scouts first name) you have achieved Scouting’s highest rank of honor, Eagle Scout. The trail hasn’t been an easy one, for only about 5 percent of all scouts achieve the rank of Eagle. You made the choice to better yourself, and build the foundation for a strong future. The life lessons that you have learned in Scouting will guide you through whatever path you choose to follow. By becoming an Eagle Scout, you have also joined the ranks of other great men, just to name a few, such as; Neil Armstrong – Who was the 1st man on the moon President Gerald Ford - Former President of the United States of America Mitchell Paige – Marine Corps Colonel and Medal of Honor recipient (highest military award) Michael Bloomberg – Mayor of New York City, founder of Bloomberg L.P. J. Willard Marriott Jr. – Chairman and CEO Marriott International Steven Spielberg – Academy award winning film director H. Ross Perot – Founder Perot systems Corp and former Presidential candidate Mike Rowe – host of “Dirty Jobs” TV show on the Discovery Channel Sam Walton- Founder of Wal-Mart and Sam’s Club, the largest single employer in the world. As a Scout you have taken an oath, chosen to follow a set of laws and live by a motto, just as many other young men have done before you. Not only in scouting, but also in the Armed Forces that defend our Nation and the Law Enforcement Officers and Firemen who protect our cities. All of these organizations have something in common. They have dedicated young men who want to serve, protect and make a difference in their communities, state and nation. As you follow your path through life, remember to hold your head high and be proud that you are an Eagle Scout.  At this time it is my pleasure to present the Marine Corps League Good Citizenship Award for obtaining the rank of Eagle Scout. (PRESENT THE AWARD) Again I’d like to thank you for allowing me the opportunity to be a part of this Eagle Court of Honor.
