  1. “A Man of Great Faith” The Apostle Peter

  2. We see in the Gospel accounts of Matthew, Mark, Luke, & John that Peter believed strongly in Jesus. • But we also see @ times his faith was weak. • Just like ours. • I believe that’s why Peter appeals to us so much as a character in the Bible. • Sometimes he’s strong. • Sometimes he’s weak. • I think we can also relate to the father of the demon-possessed boy we read about in Mark 9:14-24 Observe the story • The disciples couldn’t cast out because of fear – or lack of faith. • This was after they’d been sent out with the limited commission by Jesus with the ability to perform miracles. • We can relate, “Oh Lord I believe, help my unbelief”

  3. Turn to John, Chapter 1 • It’s not laid out the baptism of Jesus by John, Jesus going into the wilderness & tempted. • But we do see John talking about the baptism here. • Talk about the events that John references Jesus (Tell story on through) • “What do you seek?” to Andrew- He wasn’t being arbitrary • This is the earliest reference to Peter in the life of Jesus (John 1) • Simon – (Shamah) – to listen; bar- Jonah (son of- John) • Peter – Petros- rock, or a stone • As opposed to Petra – a whole ledge of rock • Peter was anything but a rock when Jesus met him… but Jesus always saw & believed in the capability of someone to be different than what they are. • He didn’t make them do that, but He always offered them the opportunity to become more than what they were. • Just like us. He will make us more than what we could be by ourselves! • That name, therefore was of promise… of hope. The name of recognition… of who you can be. • AND WE DO SEE Peter grow… into a strong rock!

  4. Peter continued to deal with Jesus. Turn to Luke 5:1-11 • Peter recognized the diety – or divine nature – of Jesus • Or at least grasped the supernatural character of Jesus. • Observe the Story • Big multitude • Let Him use the boat… not being used for anything profitable. • Peter, Andrew, James and John were all fishermen by trade • Peter then recognizes that was NOT natural. • He saw and understood that. • Much like Isaiah 6:5 “Woe is to me for I am undone! Because I am a man of unclean lips.” • He called Peter, Andrew, James, & John earlier, this is the 2nd occasion that he calls them in connection to the work in which He wants them to do. • You see Jesus is making impressions on them • Letting His relationship with them grow • Peter at least recognized that Jesus’ nature transcended men. • So Peter’s faith is growing.

  5. Kind of in the middle of His ministry, we find Jesus feeding the 5,000 • Matthew 14:14--- Observe the STORY • Verse 27 – “Lord, bid me come” • Faith has grown, if the Lord wills, I CAN walk on water • Afterward, (sigh) he’s alright now… because he has the hand of the Lord.

  6. … now let’s look at another commendable thing Peter did. • Matthew 16:13-16 • Go through confession • Then jump down to VERSEs 21-23 (Expound) • We need to point this out. This was later on… Peter had grown, but he was not perfect by any means… but this was a wonderful confession. • Go back to VERSES 13-18 Expound 17 and 18 • If it’s built on Peter, it’s gonna be an awful shifty rock • But if it’s going to be built on the deity of Jesus Christ, only God can change it • Touch briefly on Hades • Explain VERSE 19 • Now to “jokes” or references to Peter @ pearly gates. • Correct w/Matthew 18:18 plural – all apostles • The keys being talked about were more likely born out in • Acts 2- preached 1st sermon to the Jews & Proselytes • Acts 10 – Conversion of Cornelius, a Gentile • He was the 1st to preach to the Gentiles • In Acts 15 he makes that statement… beyond that… there’s nothing that sets Peter apart from the rest of the apostles.

  7. Now let’s consider another thing about Peter. • Early in Jesus’ ministry he went to Peter’s home in Capernea to heal someone – Peter’s mother-in law. (Matt. 8:14-17) • When Peter came to the house of Cornelius in Acts 10, Cornelius fell down before Peter so as to worship or kiss his big toe… or his ring or something. • Peter would not receive such homage • He was NOT the 1st pope!!!

  8. He preached the 1st gospel sermon to the Jews • He stood boldly before the Jews in Acts 3 & 4 and they took note him. • Peter and the rest did not stand there like uneducated men. WHY? • The Holy Spirit, for one thing. • But also, they’d seen the resurrected Christ • Imagine having been there • You see the furor • Put yourself there the horrible night Jesus was taken • You know, you’ve heard of… maybe even seen from afar – the crucifixion. Horrible. Beyond words. • And then you see Him alive! • What impact would that have on you?! • That’s why he spoke with boldness!

  9. Look at the words of the man himself • READ 1Peter 1:3-10 • READ 2Peter 1:16-18 • Eyewitnesses of His majesty • We learn that Peter was strong of faith… but sometimes weak… but in the end… triumphant!! • That’s what counts!
