  1. Cell Division & The Cell Cycle

  2. Why do cells need to divide? • Growth • Replace worn out cells • Repair (healing) • Asexual Reproduction

  3. 1.) Interphase • Cell grows to full size & prepares to divide • DNA is COPIED!!!!! • This phase takes the longest The PARENT CELL

  4. 2a.) Mitosis- Prophase • DNA condenses to form chromosomes & they become visible (X) • Nuclear membrane breaks down intoPIECES

  5. 2b.) Mitosis- Metaphase • Chromosome line up in the middle of the cell • Chromosomes attach to the spindle fibers

  6. 2c.) Mitosis- Anaphase • The duplicated chromosome splits & the chromatids (chromosome halves) move to opposite ends of the cell • Chromatids move “AWAY” from each other

  7. 2d.) Mitosis- Telophase • 2 new IDENTICAL nuclei are formed • Cytoplasm pinches in the middle to form a waist

  8. 3.) Cytokinesis • Cell completely splits & 2 new IDENTICAL cells are formed • They are called “Daughter Cells” • “Cytokinesis = Complete” 2 DAUGHTER CELLS
