Activities BEST courses(Learning events) • 1 - 2 weeks long • NO/Low cost for participants • around 20 students from all over Europe • FREE accommodation, meals and social activities • interesting lectures – 4 hours/day • the BEST parties • international experience • improve your knowledge • make new friends • improve your English • FUN!!! What we did in Lodz • Summer 1999: one week course for 20 students: Mechanics, Microtechnology and Microcomputers • Spring 2000: one week course for 20 students: New Techniques in Management • Spring 2002: one week course for 20 students: New Technologies in Building Industry vs. Enviroment Protection. Board of European Students of Technology

Our experience in Lodz • Summer 2003: two week course for 22 students: Biomedical Engineering • Spring 2004: one week course for 21 students in cooperation with ESA: Plasma: From Galaxies to Thin Films, held in April • Summer 2004: two week course for 20 students: Artificial Intelligence – Virtual Fight, will be held in July Board of European Students of Technology

  11. The Conference: WHY RENEWABLE ENERGY? Sustainable energy sources are the key for solving many modern environmental problems. Many of them, like hydro or solar power are easy to apply Using this kind of power would be very preferable for obtaining sustainable energy production structures One of the main goals of the Baltic University Programme is to make students from our region aware of that fact The main purpose of this activity is to show this issue not only to students from Baltic Sea region but also to students from other European countries Board of European Students of Technology

Scientific Program of the Conference Students organization BEST Lodz would like to show the situation in the Baltic region and the activity of Baltic University not only to students from our region, but also to those from other European countries This might be a very interesting comparative study: how do other European countries deal with environmental problems how do they plan to reduce the usage of fossile energy sources. how do different cultures from different regions of our continent see common problems of environmental protection. Scientific Program of the Conference • During the conference numerous activities will be provided: • Lectures by local and invited professors • Presentations • Discussions • BUP day • Presentations of the BUP courses, videoconference • Visiting places: • - Geothermal plant in Uniejow • - Hydropower plant in Wloclawek • - Solar heated residential area in Zgierz Students should be encouraged to prepare for discussions: - properties of renewable energy sources - ways of applying renewable energy sources in different locations Board of European Students of Technology

Scientific Program of the Conference Approximately 40h of lectures, discussions between students, field trips to different renewable energy plants, video or audio conferences The course will include an exam which will allow the students to get extra ECTS points (depending on local university) Board of European Students of Technology

Scientific Program of the Conference • Proposed topics of lectures: • Introduction to renewable and non-renewable energy systems • Environmental impact of energy systems • Renewable Energetic Sources (General Introduction) • Solar Thermal • Wind Power • Hydropower • Biomasses • Hydrogen + Fuel Cell • Energy carriers and storage systems Board of European Students of Technology

  17. Cost Estimates BEST does not cover travel costs 40 students: 20 BUP, 20 BEST 15 days about 170 EURO/person Total cost: BEST will get 50% from the sponsors BUP contribution: 3400 EURO (plus cost of videoconference) Board of European Students of Technology

  18. Cost Estimates The Technical University will allow BEST to use student's dormitories inorder to decrease the costs of accommodation of their guests. BEST can also use lecture rooms without any fees in cooperation with selected faculties and professors for each course. Another form of help BEST will get from our Technical University is discount meals in the canteen for guests during the courses. Board of European Students of Technology
