  1. ARE, ERE and IRE verbs How to conjugate them

  2. ARE verbs

  3. Appunti • ARE verbs are considered to be part of the first conjugation. • There are other groups such as ERE and IRE that belong to the 2nd and 3rd conjugations. • ARE verbs are conjugated by dropping the infinitive suffix (-ARE) and adding the endings that follow.

  4. How to conjugate an ARE verb • Drop the –are • Add the endings: (io) -o (tu) -i (lui/lei) -a (noi) -iamo (voi) -ate (loro) -ano

  5. Esempi • Mangiare • Parlare • Camminare • Visitare • Viaggiare • Volare • Ballare • Giocare • imparare

  6. Esempio • Mangiare • Drop the –are from mangiare • Mangi- • Io mangio, tu mangi, lui/lei mangia, noi mangiamo, voi mangiate, loro mangiano • Adesso prova tu: usa il verbo camminare

  7. Some verbs do not follow the rules: • Andare • Fare • Stare(1/2 the time) • Can you remember what these verbs are supposed to look like?

  8. Andare Io vado Tu vai Lui/lei va Noi andiamo Voi andate Loro vanno Fare Io faccio Tu fai Lui/lei fa Noi facciamo Voi fate Loro fanno

  9. Stare • Io sto • Tu stai • Lui/lei sta • Noi stiamo • Voi state • Loro stanno

  10. Facciamo un po` di pratica… • (andare) Tu______a scuola ogni settimana. • (parlare) Voi______spesso con i vostri amici. • (camminare)Io e i miei amici_______al parco. • (stare)Loro______bene! • (frequentare)Luisa_______la scuola di RCK!

  11. ERE verbs • ERE verbs are conjugated in same way…the infinitive suffix is dropped and new endings are added. • The endings are: -o, -i, -e, -iamo, -ete, -ono. • Leggere= -legg-, (io) legg- + o= leggo

  12. Here are some popular ERE verbs: • Leggere • Scrivere • Crescere • Correre • Credere • Mettere • Permettere • Dividere • ridere

  13. Some ERE verbs are irregular • Avere and Essere: belong to the ERE category but they do not follow the same rules. For example you do not conjugate AVERE as io avo! Or io esso! • These two verbs along with some others are called stem-changing verbs. • All verbs have two parts: For example Av (stem) and ere (suffix). If one says that avere is a stem changing verb they mean that avchanges too when you conjugate it!

  14. Let’s look at some examples: • Dovere (to have to…) How would you say “I have to do the homework”? • Io devo fare i compiti. • Potere (to be able to) “I can do the homework” • Io posso fare i compiti • As you can see there are a few verbs that change both the suffix and the stem….

  15. Try this practice on your own • Marco non fa i compiti di matematica, perche`(dovere)___________fare quelli di scienze. • Io e Matteo (scrivere)___________una poesia per nostra madre. • Paolo (leggere)__________un libro molto interessante. • Cristina e tu (correre)___________dopo scuola. • I miei genitori (essere)______________molto stanchi dopo il loro viaggio.

  16. ARE Io –o tu –I Lui/lei –a Noi –iamo Voi –ate Loro -ano ERE Io –o Tu –I Lui/lei –e Noi –iamo Voi –ete Loro -ono ARE and ERE verbs compared

  17. IRE verbs • IRE verbs are similar to ARE and ERE verbs in that they get conjugated the same way. • But IRE verbs tend to have a lot more irregularities: like –ISC and stem-changing. • The endings are: -o, -i, -e, -iamo, -ite, -ono

  18. ISC verbs • ISC refers to what happens to the verb once it is conjugated: • Regularly an IRE verb may look like this: io dormo • BUT an ISC verb such as capire would look like this: io capisco • Some common “IRE” verbs that use the ISC format are: pulire, capire, finire, diminuire, and spedire.

  19. Vediamo come funziona! Capire • Io capisco la lezione • Tu capisci l’italiano • Lui o lei capisce la professoressa • Noi capiamo bene • Voi capite gli studenti • Loro capiscono il problema
