  2. Aims for Year One • Help your children grow both academically and socially • More independence and responsibility for themselves • Have a smooth transition from the Foundation Stage

  3. Transition • Classroom environment (areas, tables, similarities) • Outdoor learning • Child initiated and adult led learning • Teaching – specific to the needs of the children, timing • Revised topics • Morning meeting

  4. Targets • All children have targets that they are working towards in Literacy and Numeracy. • Copies of Literacy and Numeracy targets will be given out at parents evening. Maths targets will be highlighted in Curriculum News. • Achievable. • Raise attainment and understanding.

  5. Expectations of Behaviour • The children are very familiar with the Millbrook Message Rules and Consequences. • It is expected that ALL children follow these rules at ALL times. • Reinforcement from home is essential. • If your child receives a letter home regarding their behaviour, please discuss it with your child and return the slip to school. • If you have any concerns about your child’s behaviour in school, please make an appointment to see your class teacher or the Key Stage Leader.

  6. Integrated Topic • Art, DT, History, Geography and Science will be taught through a main topic theme. The topics are Super Heroes, My Environment and Fairy Tales. • We will be using a variety of learning approaches to support and enhance all children’s preferred learning styles.

  7. Reading • Year One teachers hear children read at least once a week • Year One Teaching Assistants also hear the children read • Children may not have their book changed every week

  8. Please make sure that everything is named. Please make sure your child has the correct PE kit: correct coloured T-shirt and shorts. Only stud earrings allowed in school but these need to be removed for swimming, games and PE. No nail polish allowed in school. Hair to be tied up where possible and hard hairclips or hair bands to be removed. Girls must wear a full swimming costume (no bikinis) for swimming lessons. Boys must have appropriate swimming trunks. P.E. Requirements

  9. PE Kit • Swimming: Monday • Games: both classes Wednesday • PE: 1CU Tuesday, 1CE Friday • Children will keep their PE kit at school. They will be sent home at the end of half-term.

  10. Homework • Every child should have the opportunity to read to an adult at home every day. • Weekly homework to be handed in by Friday. • Spellings will begin after Christmas. Weekly spellings to be practised for a test every Friday.

  11. Trips • Autumn Term - Stories and More (Super Heroes) • Spring Term - Round Wood (My Environment) • Summer Term - Drama (Fairy Tales)

  12. Global Cafe • www.parentpay.com • Parents pay online or at a Pay point store for school dinners. • No cash brought into school. • Fantastic catering team, menu and café! • Please ensure you give your child a healthy lunchbox.

  13. Medical • Any prescription medication must come to school in the box with the printed label on. • Parents must ensure that all inhalers or epi-pens in school are in date. • Any antibiotics that can be given outside of school hours is recommended. • Staff will not be able to administer prescription medicines to a pupil. • Children are not permitted to have any creams, throat sweets or eye drops on themselves or in their bags. No non-prescribed medicines are allowed in school.

Other Dates to Remember: • 26th September: KS1 After School Clubs begin • 3rd October: Black History Week • 18th October: Individual Photographs • 19th October: Open Day and Evening • 7th November: Stories and More • 8th November: Book Fair • 14th November: International Week • 29th November & 1st December: Parent Evenings • 13th December: KS1 Christmas Performance (2pm)

  15. Polite Reminder Children may begin to enter the school building from 8.45am, school starts at 8.50am sharp. Children should be collected from the playground at 3.15pm If your child is unwell and will not be attending school, please phone the school office. When your child returns to school, please send an absence note in.
