  2. Spiezle Presenters Moderator: Steve Leone, AIA, LEED™ap – Principal Presenters: Jason Kliwinski, AIA, LEED™ap– Director of Sustainable Design Scott Spiezle, AIA, LEED™ap – CEO Mid-Atlantic Solar Energy Industries Association Member 2009 Green Leadership Award Honoree USGBC-NJ Green Leadership Honoree in the category of ‘Corporate Commitment: Small Business’

  3. Why PV’s? • Cash Positive – Day 1 • Minimal Risk • Recoverable Collateral • Must Act Now!

  4. Integrating Renewable Energy We look for ways to save you money during early planning efforts: CASH POSITIVE Solutions NJ Clean Energy Program SREC Program REIP Program Lease-Purchase Options We ARE Renewable Energy Experts!

  5. Benefits of Renewable Energy • Economic Benefits • Reduce operating costs by offsetting electric use. • Generate income through SREC’s (Solar Renewable Energy Credits- $500-$650/credit): • Each time a solar photovoltaic system generates 1000kWh (1MWh) of electricity, an SREC is issued which can then be sold or traded independent of the power generation. • Example: 100KW~ 100SRECs or $50,000 value • Environmental Benefits • Reduce fossil fuel consumption and lowering greenhouse gas emissions. • Social Benefits • Educate students, staff, and parents on renewable energy. • Integrate lessons into science, math, and environmental studies.

  6. What is Driving the Renewable Energy Market in New Jersey • NJ Renewable Portfolio Standard: • requires 22.5% of NJ Power be provided by renewable sources by 2021. • Annual percentage increases 2.12% each year to meet goal. • Specific In-State solar set aside requires 2.5GW by 2021 & 5.3GW by 2026. • Penalties applied for every kW not met. • Current Penalty is $711/kW http://www.dsireusa.org

  7. Factors Influencing Photovoltaic System Design • Solar orientation • Obstructions (trees, adjacent high walls, chimneys, water towers) • Roof top equipment, vents, conduits, etc. • 10’ perimeter clearance for roof edge fall protection • Exist’g roof structure support/condition of roof system • Wind uplift requirements

  8. Factors Influencing Photovoltaic System Design • PV panel arrangement – • Minimum 300 sf per panel group • 7 panels wide by 4 rows deep minimum • Allow for firefighter access • Racking system – ballasted system eliminates roof penetrations & allows for easy removal/re-roofing • Educational/ PR use of energy production information • Web based platform for use in curriculum and district website • Kiosks in public spaces

  9. Lawrence Township School District1.2 MW Photovoltaic System on 7 Schools • 1,200 RECs/yr: $600,000 • Avoided Energy Costs/yr: $198,000

  10. Spiezle Office 10 KW Photovoltaic Roof Mounted System • CASH FLOW ANALYSIS: • 10KW system cost installed:* $67,000.00 • NJCEP REIP Grant: $30,000.00 • SAG Installed Cost: $37,000.00 • 30% Tax Credit: $11,100.00 • Loan Amount $25,900.00 • Avoided Yearly Energy Costs: $1,500.00 • SREC** Annual Income: $5,000.00 • P/I @ 6% -$2,623.00 • Positive Cash Flow: $3,877.00 • *Based on $6.70/watt installed cost & design fees included • ** Based on SREC value of $500 and fixed utility rate of .15/kwh initial cost

  15. American Recovery and Reinvestment Actof 2009 AND

  16. American Recovery and Reinvestment Actof 2009 (Public Law 111-5) • Section 1603: US Department of the Treasury makes payments to • eligible persons who place in service specified energy property and • apply for such payments. Property must be used in a trade or • business or held in production of income: • Solar Credits = 30% of Eligible Cost Basis • Energy property construction must begin in 2010 • Treasury Department will make payments to qualified applicants within 60 days from the date the completed application is received! • ALL APPLICATIONS MUST BE RECEIVED BEFORE THE STATUTORY DEADLINE OF OCTOBER 1, 2011
