  3. Getting to know Marc • Enjoys flying, scuba diving, squash, tennis, car mechanics and home repairs • Sailed across the Atlantic in a 59-foot yawl with 12 other crewmen in 1969 and 1970 • Enjoys living with his wife Pamela Soame and their three children

Background • Full name Joseph Jean-Pierre Marc Garneau • Born February 23,1949 • Entered politics in 2006 • Joined the Canadian Forces Maritime Command in 1974 to work as an engineer and got promoted to commander in 1982 • Canadian retired military officer, former astronaut, engineer and politician

Life in Space • Canada's first astronaut • First Canadian astronaut in space (October 1984) • Flew on the shuttle Challenger STS-41-G form October 5 to 13 • Promoted to captain in 1986 and left navy in 1989 • Was on 2 further flights to space • Recorded almost 678 hours in space and is now retired as an astronaut • Was appointed vice-president of the Canadian space agency in February 2001and became its president in the same year

Accomplishments(1) • Appointed an officer of the Order of Canada in 1984 in recognition of his role as the first Canadian astronaut • Promoted the rank of companion with the order in 2003 for his extensive work with Canada's space program • Honored with a high school named after him (Marc Garneau Collegiate Institute) in Toronto • In 2003 Garneau was made a Companion of the Order of Canada, the highest civilian honor

Accomplishments(2) • The honorary captain of the Royal Canadian Sea Cadets • Awarded the Canadian Forces Decoration for 12 years of honorable service with the Canadian Forces • He was seconded to the new Canadian Astronaut Program (CAP), one of seven chosen from 4000 applicants • Earned a degree in engineering and a doctorate
