Curriculum Breakdown • Literacy (Reading, Oral Language, Handwriting and Writing) – everyday • Numeracy (Mathematics) – everyday 80% Number knowledge and strategy, 20% Strand • Maori – daily with focus on lessons once a week • The Arts - Sound Art, Dance Drama and Visual Art • Topic Studies - daily • E-learning- specific instruction with MrsClyne

Homework • All children have homework EVERY night. - Reading - Basic words/letters - Basic facts (Rm 5) - Poem/Phonics (Fridays) - Wikispace (study ladder) (R3 still being set up) - Specific Oral Language Programme (excl R3 which will start in term 2) Children should spend no more than 30 minutes on homework, per night. Check out our school website for really helpful ways you can further help at home!

Independence and Self Management Skills • Being Ready for school… Encourage your child to put their homework in their own bag ready for school and prepare their togs and news for the following day. • Self Management Guide your child to be independent in putting their shoes on, taking them off, getting undressed, dressed and drying themselves.

  9. Year 2 & 3 Class • Cross grouping with Room 6,7 & 8 for EOTC • Speeches Term 2 • Specific sporting events for Year 3 & 4 ie swimming sports • Testing specific to Year 3 & 4s - Does not include trips topic specific trips.

What topics will we be learning this year? • Term 1- Me & My World -looking at things that revolve around your child (Health and Wellbeing) • Term 2- Alfriston School time Machine- travelling back in time (Social Studies/ Technology) • Term 3-Books Books Books -Study of different authors (The Arts-) • Term 4-Out of this world (Science-Planet Earth and Beyond)

Did you know? • We are a litter free school • We recycle all our classroom paper • We have extra paper recycling available for you to use too. • Your child can’t use any computer, ipods, cameras or other electronic device requiring internet connection if they have not signed and handed in their ICT agreement. • Each class has a wiki page that your child can access in order to access extra supporting material to classroom programmes.

Reporting in the Junior School • 4 weeks @ school • 6 months @ school (5 ½ years) • 1 year @ school (6 years) • 18 months @ school (6 ½ years) • 2 years @ school ( 7 years) • 30 months @ school ( 7 ½ years) • 3 years @ school (8 years) • From here students go to the June/July and December reporting systems. • Interview times: These will accompany the report. Please fill out and return to the teacher ASAP

Talk to us! • It is really important that you let us know of things happening in your child’s world… • When you arrive at school to drop off or pick up your child, this is an ideal time to chat to your child’s teacher. Please be aware that the teacher needs to be in front of the class at 8.45 ready to take the roll. If you think you may need longer than the time available at drop off time – please make a time to see your child’s teacher. • Email us if there are things that you prefer are not said in front or in your child’s hearing. • Let us know if you are available to help out with helping out at swimming, writing or other times during the day.
