Anothervery busy year • The 2002 CEOS year was an extremely full one – hopefully yielding long term benefits for CEOS and its Members and Associates • Major elements • Strategy planning • CRT-2 • WSSD 2002 • Promoting Earth Observation for Sustainable Development • Developing a CEOS follow-up to WSSD 2002 • Outreach and promotion • New publications • Technical and practical progress

Strategy Planning • CEOS Review Team-2 • “The 15th CEOS Plenary … renewed the mandate of the CEOS Review Team for a further year in order to address the full range of activities and structures within CEOS, including the CEOS Working Groups, and to develop a new CEOS Strategic Plan..” • A significant undertaking • Numerous telecons, meetings and communications • 9 CEOS Members represented (thank you!) • Five Year Plan for CEOS provided to Plenary, plus the CRT-2 Chairman’s recommendations for the way ahead

WSSD 2002 • ESA further developed NASDA’s emphasis on targeting international bodies with responsibility for identifying information & actions required for significant global environmental conventions and treaties • Significant CEOS involvement in WSSD PrepCom process • Thanks to the NOAA/NASDA/ESA team • CEOS stand in the WSSD exhibition hall • CEOS brochure specifically developed for WSSD 2002 • CEOS Handbook and CD-ROM • CEOS Annual Report • CEOS Newsletter • Side events

  5. WSSD 2002 • CEOS statement for WSSD prepared • 12 specific references in the Johannesburg Implementation Plan to satellite/remote sensing/Earth observation • CEOS WSSD Follow-up Programme (CWFP) launched during 16th Plenary week: • Plenary agenda includes discussion of the way ahead for CEOS

  6. Outreach and promotion • ESA emphasised provision of new CEOS materials for use over the coming years: • CEOS Handbook and CD-ROM • On-line at http://www.eohandbook.com • WSSD brochure and fact sheets

  7. Technical and practical progress • Ten CEOS SEC telecons/meetings between Kyoto and Frascati • Sincere thanksto the members of CEOS SEC for their tireless efforts • Membership management • UNESCO applications • Significant WG activity • Further development of IGOS Themes
