  5. Statistics for the year 2009. • Space: 16.705 m² (insufficient) • Staff: 553 • Collection: 2.164.537 book volumes, materials • Serial publications: 2179 titles • Users: 300.000 • Loan: 5.043.222 volumes • More than 270 cultural events for adults and 9490 events for children and young adults

City Life and Library Service in Zagreb • Professional development, continuing education, the recommendations of IFLA/UNESCO, EBLIDA and NAPLE Guidelines, form the general recommendations which advise policies and strategies of our libraries. • They emphasize the following roles for the public libraries: • locally based service • providing information service tailored to local needs,reducing the information disparity between the information rich and the information poor • lifelong learning which implies a strategic use of the public library system providing access to networks and supporting all kinds of education • cultural and linguistic development which implies responsibilities in relation to cultural heritage, literature and literacy • providing free and equal access to high-quality information for allcitizens.

Croatian Center for Children’s Book • Established in 1993. • In 1995. became the Croatian section of IBBY-a • Functions: • Collecting valuable publications of Croatian children’s book • Promotion of Croatian children’s book in the country and abroad • Nominating of Croatian writers and illustrators for international awards

  29. Reading promotion and literacy Reading, writing and the ability to use numbers are basicprerequisites to being an integrated and active member of society. Reading and writing are also the basic techniques needed for making use of new communication systems. The public library should support activities that will enable people to make the best use of modern technology. It should support other institutions that are combating illiteracy and promoting media competence. We in Zagreb City Libraries achieve this by: • promoting reading • organizing events to promote an interest in reading, literature and media culture • promoting and providing training in the use of computer technology • co-operating with teachers, parents and other contact persons to help new citizens acquire the necessary educational skills that will help them to manage their life in the new context

Reading promotion and literacy • organizing workshops for librarians, speech-therapeutists and publishers to show them how to prepare easy-to-read materials (according to IFLA guidelines for easy-to-read materials and library-based literacy programs) and implement logo-bibliotherapy for population with reading and writing difficulties. It is important because reading problems are usually caused by insufficient education but also by handicap, intellectual disability, dyslexia or other factors such as unemployment, high crime, or family breakdown. • Special activities: tribune Literary Friday, data base Anniversary Calendar, organization of the manifestation The Month of the Croatian Book, internet based reference service Ask a Librarian • Special events: World in Zagreb is a program of exhibitions and cultural events for children and adults which takes place in the Library. It is a result of co-operation with cultural institutions and foreign embassies which aims to introduce other cultures and traditions to the citizens of Zagreb. In the form of these projects we cooperate with our sister libraries in Moscow and Shanghai through the project Window of Shanghai.

Conclusion Libraries as holders of national development strategy and the cultural traditions preservation at national, regional and local level, by the reading stimulation projects are getting involved into cultural exchange, European and world politics of cooperation in transformation, computerization and globalization. The goals of libraries: • in preparing process for entering the EU – to develop cooperation, exchange and cultural dialogue in the process of globalization • equipment for information and technological literacy • national policy and strategy – to return the book / reading its dignity • the two–way channel in the cultural exchange

Conclusion How? • promoting reading and literacy • promoting critical thinking in a central aspect of new economy • teaching how to find information, interpreting, sorting, evaluating, manipulating, repacking information in dozens of forms from thousands of sources • librarians in co-operation with other specialist are organizing workshops, seminars and other forms of permanent educations • by the reading stimulation projects, libraries are involved in cultural exchange, European and world politics of cooperation in transformation, computerization and globalization

  33. Conclusion How? • having a fundamental understanding of the legal and ethical uses of digital materials • implementation of logo-bibliotherapy for population with reading and writing difficulties • cultural and linguistic development which implies responsibilities in relation to cultural heritage, literature and literacy Zagreb City Libraries have responded to all these challenges and have taken the opportunity to develop services in a new and exciting way.
