  2. Government • Constitutional Republic • Gained Independence from Spain on July 10, 1810 • Power divided into Executive, Legislative, and Judiciary branches • President Juan Manuel Santos Calderon • Vice Angelino Garzon

  3. History • Santa Marta, the first Spanish settlement, was founded in 1525 • Full independence from Spain was gained in 1813 • Colombia recieved it's name from the explorer Christopher Colombus • In 1991 a constitution brought major reforms to Colombias political institutions

Economy, Per. 1 • Colombia's economy can be divided into 4 general periods • The First period ended in 1880 • During this time Colombia had no stable exports to create profit • This played a huge role in Colombia's economy • People and organizations were not able to purchase goods that were produced in other countries

  5. Economy, Per. 2 • This general period lasted from 1880 to 1930 • During these 50 years Colombia exported coffee on a ridiculous scale • The goal of this mass exportation was to pay for manufactured goods • Industrialization also started to develop

  6. Economy, Per. 3 • This period lasted from 1930 to 1967 • In this time Colombia was industrialized on a major scale • Coffee revenue used to buy intermediate goods, or material for factories

  7. Economy, Per. 4 • 1967 to Present • Up to present day, Colombia is trying to diversify its exports. Many supplementary goods joined coffee and refined petroleum as major money makers • All of these changes have led to today's Free Market Economy, with major ties to the U.S

  8. General Geography • Located in northwestern South America • Surrounded by Panama, Venezuela, Brazil, Peru, and Ecuador • 4th Largest country in South America • In control of 8 islands: Gargona, Gargonilla, Malpelo, San Andres, Providencia, San Bernardo, Islas Del Rosario, Isla Fuerto

  9. Geography within Colombia • States in Colombia are known as departments • Coasts of Colombia located on the edge of Pacific Ocean and Caribbean Sea • Area is 440,000 miles squared

Climate • Colombia is so close to the equator that altitude is the only factor of climate • The Coastal and Eastern planes are at a low, tropical climate • The mountains to the north are a nice climate of 65-70 degrees yearly. They are a good place for agriculture • The cold regions, 6,000 to 9,000 feet above sea level, have an average temperature of 53 degrees.

  14. Climate Cont. • Anywhere above 9000 feet is at freezing temperature, making it impossible for agriculture • Snow line begins at 15,000 feet • Northern tip of Colombia is the driest place in the country • Cities in the choco department get as much as 400" of rain per year

Country Flag • The Colombian flag consists of 3 colors: yellow, Blue, and Red • The yellow in the flag stands for all the gold that has been found in Colombia • The blue stands for the oceans bordering it • The red stands for all the blood spilled by the people who fought for Columbia's freedom

  16. Currency • Colombia uses the Peso for a currency • 1800 Pesos are worth approximately 1 US Dollar • The Peso was adopted in 1837, replacing the real • Pesos in banknote form (paper) come in amounts of 1000, 2000, 5000, 10,000, 20,000, and 50,000

Cultural Visuals, Las Lajas Sanctuary • A Minor basilican church built inside the canyon of the Guáitara River • Was inspired by a marvelous event in 1754 when Maria Mueces and her deaf, mute daughter Rosa were caught in a storm. Rosa, who had never spoken before, called “The mestiza is calling me...” and pointed to the lightning illuminated silhouette of the Virgin Mary, hovering over the laja • The current Church, the 3rd one, took 33 years to build, and was completed in 1949

  18. Cultural Visuals, 2 The Holiday of Christmas • Colombians starts christmas with El Dia de las velitas (the day of the candle) • Celebrates the virgin Mary • Candles placed wherever they can be seen • December 7th is when this holiday starts
