  1. Politics at the University of Strathclyde Dr. Neil McGarvey

  2. Politics: your mum and dad’s view and the actual subject • Negative imagery … party politics, imagery of conflict, parliamentary expenses scandals (‘they’re all in it for themselves’) i.e. it is an activity divorced from them and alien to them … keep politics out of some activity or other (sport etc). • But politics is a universal activity takes place in family, community, cities, countries, states, nations, supra-nationally, globally.

  3. What is Politics? • Conversations in bars, clubs and pubs … • Drink (licensing of premises, advertising, minimum pricing) • Sex (what is, what isn’t lawful, age of consent) • Football (contract law, the regulation of referees!) • Religion (scandals, churches, education …) are important subjects BUT politics is usually regarded as boring, distasteful and something that could well be done without

  4. Defining politics • Conflict. • Resolution. • Power. • Authority. • Control. • Liberal democracies tend to equate politics and democracy with freedom, liberty, equal rights, the ballot box, Parliament …

  5. Defining Politics • It explores major issues such as power, authority, legitimacy, conflict, democracy and liberty in many different arenas … • 'Politics: who gets what, when, how’Lasswell (1936), Politics: Who Gets What, When, How. • Conflict and disagreement are at the heart of political activity … ‘the heart of politics is often portrayed as a process of conflict resolution’ (Heywood Politics 2007:4)

  6. What is politics? • Unfortunately for the student of politics … the question What is Politics? Is … likely to generate confusion than bring comfort or reassurance. The problem with politics is that debate, controversy and disagreement lie at its very heart, and the definition of ‘the political’ is no exception (Heywood 1994: 16)
