  1. Daylight/Twilight High School Trenton, New Jersey

  2. What's in a Name? How We Became Daylight/Twilight High School

  3. Why Non-Traditional ? • In 1999 Trenton Schools were approaching a 70% drop out rate. • Over 50 % of the city’s adult population did not have a high school diploma. • With the advent of DTHS and other initiatives : • High school enrollment increased by 40%. • In 2002 the number of High School Graduates almost tripled.

  4. Program Components • Multiple sites strategically placed throughout Trenton: “Walking” program • 2) Flexible start times: • 7:30 AM to 8PM • Mixed age groups • 4) High School diploma (No GED)

  5. School Environment • Metal detectors = (0) • Serious incident Reports = (0) • 3) Suspensions = (0) Why?

  6. Our Philosophy • “You can’t eat the orange and throw the peel away – A man is not piece of fruit.” Willy Loman in Arthur Miller’s Death of a Salesman. • The high nutrition of the orange peel. • We have proof that the “peels” have succeeded. *Note: Studies have found that the peel had the highest levels of vitamin C followed by the pulp then the juice. Only 26% of vitamin C of a citrus fruit can be found in the juice. The peel had 53% and the pulp and rag had 21%. http://www.ultimatecitrus.com/vitaminc.html

  7. Demonstration Site • State of New Jersey Approved Demonstration School. • 2. $39 million new building scheduled to open in the Spring of 2008.

  8. Demonstration School Support for Non-traditional Education Non-traditional education currently is limited to “word of mouth” communication. National formal and informal networks to support ‘non-traditional’ schools need to be established.

  9. Demonstration Schools • At the center of the Network should be a series of • regional, non-traditional demonstration schools to: • A. Provide regional leadership. • B. Facilitate learning opportunities for educators. • C. Facilitate partnerships between community. • organizations, schools and universities.
