  1. PA Dutch 101 Video 40: The Passive Voice. Passive.

  2. Passive Voice • The Passive Voice means that the subject of the sentence is not doing the action of the verb, but rather the action of the verb is being done to the subject of the sentence. • English uses is/are being + past participle to form the passive voice: • A new house is being built on our street.

  3. Passive Voice • To form the Passive Voice in PD, you use the forms of waerre(Video 23) + the past participle (Video 35). • Subject – waerre – past participle • Die Maschienwaerdgwesche. • The car is being washed. • Die Bicherwaerregelese. • The books are being read.

  4. Passive Voice • Although passive sentences need not indicate who performs the action of the verb, some passive sentences include an “agent”. • When there is an “agent” in the sentence, PD uses the preposition VUN before it. • Remember, VUN is a Dative Preposition! • EsHauswaerdvunmeimNoochberwidderhergschtellt. • The house is being restored by my neighbor.

  5. Iewing - Practice • Turn the following sentences from Active to Passive: • Mei Daadikaaft en Maschien. • En MaschienwaerdvunmeimDaadikaaft. • Der Hund beisst der Poschtmann. • Der PoschtmannwaerdvundemHundgebisse. • Der Joe un John singe en Lied. • En Lied waerdvun de Joe un John gsunge.
