  2. SITUATIONAL BARRIERS I • Stepping back into education needs adapting • Language barrier of immigrants • Lack of basic skills (illiteracy, innumeracy) • Intensity of learning must be high • No belief in impact

  3. SITUATIONAL BARRIERS II • No time for AE • Lack of care for children • Dependant relatives • Difficulties in prioritizing • Lack of support • Risk of losing the breadwinning job while attending the AE course

  4. FINANCIAL BARRIERS • Lack of financial means / funding • No technical support • Difficulties in prioritizing

  5. OTHERBARRIERS • Drug abuse • Health problems • Other addictions

  6. These barriers may be addressed by MENTORING

  7. What is mentoring • Developmental relationship between more experienced and less experienced partners. • Partnership between two people normally working in a similar field or sharing similar experiences. • Powerful personal development and empowerment tool. • Helpful relationship based upon mutual trust and respect.

What does mentor do? • Listens patiently and actively; • Inspires trust; • Respects the other; • Gives advice without dictating actions; • Encourages independence while offering support at the same time; • Offers constructive criticism as well as compliments; • Is sincere, open and honest; • Is a guide, both through actions and words; • Is empathic; • Establishes and respects confidentiality.

  11. Language barrier of immigrants The Circle Communication rules are different. Deprived of most common communication form.

No time for Adult Education Details Focused on: The importance of the details Objective: To understand how much we do without realizing it Description: Participant needs to describe one action (i.e. driving to work; walking a dog) in detail. Participant needs to start from getting up from a chair and describe every small step he / she does.
